Jack Van Fossen pitched a complete game and Underwood never trailed in advancing to the State Championship game on Friday against Beckman Catholic or West Lyon. The Eagles out hit Cascade 6-5, taking advantage of 3 Cascade errors. Mason Boothby set the tempo early, singling and scoring in the 1st and 3rd innings, putting them ahead 2-0. Cascade answered with a run in the 5th but the Eagles added an insurance run in the bottom 5th.
Jack Van Fossen retired the first-two batters of the game before Cooper Hummel singled. Hummel would be stranded at 1st to end the inning after a popup to the shortstop ended the inning. Mason Boothby started the bottom 1st with a rope down the 3rd base line for a single. A wild pitch moved him to 2nd base, then a ground out moved Boothby to 3rd base with 1 out. Garrett Luett reached on an error, scoring Boothby from 3rd, putting Underwood up 1-0 bottom 1st. Cascade got out of trouble with a double play with 2-runners on.
Will Hosch got a high bounce on a ground ball towards 2nd base that hopped into right-center field for a base hit with 2-outs in the top 2nd. A ground ball to 2nd base by Mick Hoffman ended the threat. Underwood got a runner on base after a strikeout but didn’t score bottom 2nd and remained in front 1-0.
Jack Van Fossen gets Cascade in order top of the 3rd. He had gotten the first-two batters out in each of the first-two innings, but Cascade had gotten 2-out singles. Mason Boothby gets his second single of the game, leading off the bottom 3rd inning. Jack Van Fossen singled and Ryker Adair singles with 1-out to score Boothby, runners on 1st and 3rd. Easton Robertson grounds to 3rd and Van Fossen thrown out a home for the 2nd out. The Eagles strand 2 bottom 3rd.
Cascade goes down in order top 4th for the second straight inning. Nick Hackett reached on a throwing error bottom 4th with 1-out, moves to 2nd on a wild pitch, advancing to 3rd on a ground out to 2nd. Jackson Green replaces Jase Reincke on the mound and Cascade got Mason Boothby out for the first time with a fly ball to centerfield. Eagles lead 2-0 after 4.
Will Hosch walked with 1-out top of the 5th, first walk given up by Jack Van Fossen. Hosch moved to 2nd on a ground out by Mick Hoffman and took 3rd on a wild pitch. Nathan Schockmoehl makes the Eagles pay with a base hit up the middle, scoring Hosch, pulling Cascade within 2-1. Jack Van Fossen gets out of trouble with his fifth strikeout of the game. Eagles hold a 2-1 lead going bottom 5th. Ryker Adair walks with 2-outs and Easton Robertson reaches on an error. Adair scores for the Eagles on a single to left by Gus Bashore. Ty Frasher made a great catch up against the fence to end the Eagles threat with runners on 1st and 2nd. Underwood led 3-1 going top 6th.
Ty Frasher reached on an infield single, followed by single from Mason Otting with 1-out. Frasher became the 2nd out, getting hit by a ground ball to shortstop. Will Hosch walks to load the bases. Jack Van Fossen gets out of a bases loaded jam with a foul ball pop out. Eagles lead 3-1. Mason Boothby gets his third single of the game with 2-outs bottom 6th. He is stranded at 1st to end the inning.
Cascade gets a runner on top 7th but Nick Hackett makes the play from 2nd base to get the final out and Underwood advances into the championship game with a 3-1 win.
Mason Boothby had 3 hits for Underwood, scoring a pair of runs. Jack Van Fossen went all 7 innings, allowing 5 hits and 1 earned run with 5 strikeouts. Ryker Adair added a base hit with an RBI and scoring a run. Gus Bashore added an RBI single in the 6th inning.
Nathan Schockmoehl had an RBI single for Cascade while Cooper Hummel, Ty Frasher and Will Hosch all had a base hit with Hosch scoring a run.
The Eagles head into the championship game at 22-5. Cascade ends the season 25-9.
