Brincks Exteriors Sports Report: Kingsley-Pierson wins the opening game at the Class 1A State Baseball Tournament

South Winneshiek and Kingsley-Pierson opened up the 2023 Iowa High School State Baseball Tournament on Monday morning. South Winneshiek came to bat in the top half of the first inning but could not push a run across after picking up a hit, and we went to the home half tied 0-0. In the bottom of the first Kingsley-Pierson pushed across five runs off of three hits and capitalized on three South Winneshiek errors. Most of the Kingsley-Pierson runs in the first came with two outs in the inning as they sent ten batters to the plate. In the top of the second inning South Winneshiek was able to get another runner on base via a base on balls but again was unable to push a run across. Kinglsey-Pierson threatened in the bottom half with two runs in scoring position but did not score. In the top of the third, South Winneshiek went in order, and Kingsley-Pierson still held a 5-0 lead. In the home half of the third, the Kingsley-Pierson Panthers led the inning off with a single, but the runner was later picked off at second, and the Panthers still held on to a 5-0 lead going to the fourth inning. South Winneshiek scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth off of one hit to cut into the Panther lead 5-1.

South Winneshiek built some momentum in the bottom of the fourth inning after a 5-4-3 double play and diving catch made by the shortstop. The Warriors would come to bat in the top of the fifth, trailing 5-1, and proceeded to go in order. Kingsley-Pierson got an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead 6-1 going to the sixth. In the top of the seventh inning, South Winneshiek would go in order, and Kingsley-Pierson would advance to the state semifinal by a final score of 6-1.

Kingsley-Pierson picked up six runs on eight hits and only committed one error on defense. For South Winneshiek, they picked up one run on two hits and committed five errors. Kingsley-Pearson will take on the winner of Notre Dame, Burlington, and Lisbon.
