Carroll improved to 15-3 against non Raccoon River Conference opponents and 7-0 against the Hawkeye 10 Conference with their second win against Denison Schleswig in the opening round of the Class 4A postseason on Thursday. Carroll trailed once, after the Monarchs scored a pair of runs in the top of the 3rd. Carroll responded with 5-runs in the bottom half, taking a 6-2 lead. They extended the lead to 7-2 in the 6th before Denison Schleswig added a pair of unearned runs in the 7th. Carroll pounded out 9 hits and gave up 7 hits.
Carroll struck first, getting an unearned run in the 2nd inning. Emma Kuhlmann reached on an error, then scored on a sac bunt. She advanced to 2nd on the bunt and nobody covered 3rd, so she began to run to 3rd when the Monarchs threw the ball away, allowing her to score. Denison Schleswig battled back in the 3rd. They opened the inning with a single, scoring on a single later in the inning. Ashlyn Herrig, who drove in a run, scored later in the inning on a Tiger error. The Tigers quickly went back in front, scoring 5-runs in the bottom 3rd, batting 10 girls in the inning. Averi Burke singled with 1-out, followed by an RBI double from Makalei Kofron, a RBI single from Ava Gross, a sac bunt from Camryn Schable, Olivia Rowedder had an RBI single and Emma Kuhlmann drove in a pair with another single. The Tigers held a 6-2 lead into the 6th as Camryn Schable kept inducing balls to the right side, keeping Ava Gross, Emma Kuhlmann and Amanda Wardell busy. The Monarchs left two on base in the 4th and 6th innings. Averi Burke had a 1-out double in the 6th and scored on a single by Ava Gross, putting Carroll up 7-2. The Monarchs used an error early in the top 7th to score a pair of unearned runs by Camryn Schable induced a popup to herself to end the game.
Ava Gross had a team high 3 hits along with a pair of RBI and scoring a run. Emma Kuhlmann had two hits with a pair of RBI and scored a run. Makalei Kofron doubled, scoring a run and Olivia Rowedder singled with an RBI and scored a run. Averi Burke had a double and scored twice. Camryn Schable earned the win, going 7 innings, allowing 7 hits and 3 earned run.
The Tigers improved to 15-19 and will head to Dallas Center-Grimes on Saturday in Regional Semifinal round on 93.7 KKRL.
