Woodbine At Coon Rapids Bayard

Coon Rapids Bayard 5

Woodbine 1

Coon Rapids Bayard kept their hopes for a conference title alive, getting a great strong pitching performance from Cade Behrens and enough offense in the 1st inning to beat Woodbine. The Tigers came into the game with a half game lead on Coon Rapids Bayard for the conference lead, but walked into a lions den. The Crusaders were hungry after losing Wednesday in Woodbine and their was the extra incentive to win on the night the stadium would be official named after Hall of Fame Coach John Waddle and his wife Lisa. Behrens walked the first guy he faced on 4 pitches and quickly received a visit from Coach Waddle on the mound. Coach settled him in and the Crusaders took control of the game shortly after. Woodbine stranded a runner on base when Woodbine got picked off at 3rd after trying to take the bag on a pick off play at 2nd base. The Crusaders used that energy to score 3-runs in the bottom half. Cal Heydon opened the game with a double and Lance Clayburg singled to put runners on the corners. Clayburg stole 2nd and both guys scored on a single by Jacob Estrada. Jace Baker came in to run for Estrada and scored on a squeeze play from Parker Hays. The defense was set perfectly most of the night as the Tigers kept hitting the ball at the outfield and infield who were in a slight shift to right field and up the middle on the infield. Behrens kept throwing strikes and Woodbine stranded 4-runners on base through 4 innings before breaking through in the 5th. They scored a run with a walk and back-to-back singles. That would be all they would get stranding runners on 2nd and 3rd in the 5th, then leaving a guy on base in the 6th and 7th. The Crusaders took advantage of Lance Clayburg getting hit-by-pitch in the 3rd, scoring on a single by Ty Heydon. Kolby Culbertson led off the 4th with a single and scored when Jacob Estrada was hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded. Coon Rapids Bayard had a chance to blow the game wide open but left the bases loaded in the 3rd and 4th innings.

Cade Behrens earned the win, going all 7 innings with 7 hits, 1 earned run and 4 strikeouts. Kolby Culbertson had a team high 2 hits and scored a run while Jacob Estrada drove in 3-runs, including the first-two of the game. Parker Hays and Ty Heydon each added an RBI.

The Crusaders improved to 21-4 overall and 10-2 in the RVC. They will get a good test on Saturday when they play Clarinda in Des Moines at the Brent Prange Classic.

A 2-run single by Ryan North in the 3rd inning gave Carroll the lead for good as they pick up a 5-1 win at Greene County on Friday. Jake Jorgensen followed with a sac fly to put the Tigers up 3-1. The Tigers response didn’t allow Greene County to get momentum after they scored in the bottom 1st.
