Carroll left 10 on base, striking out 10 times but had a chance as the game was scoreless going into the 9th inning. Merchants pitchers walked 6 batters and hit 2 but kept coming up with big outs to keep Joplin off the board. A single to start the top of t he 9th was followed by a triple for Joplin and they broke the seal. A single followed the triple as the first-three batters got on base to start the 9th. Joplin added an insurance run on a wild pitch, putting them up 3-0, going into the bottom 9th. The Merchants went down in order in the 9th. The Merchants missed a chance to score in the 4th, getting two runners on base with a walk and a Joplin error but they weren’t able to get the clutch hit. They looked like they could take a lead in the 6th, loading the bases with a walk to start the inning, then getting a 2-out single and a walk, but stranded all 3-runners. Carroll loaded the bases again in the 7th with a hit-by-pitch to Kasey Carter to leadoff the inning. Justin Johnson singled and Dillon Kuehl walked with 1-out. A pair of shallow fly balls to left ended the Merchants threat.
The Merchants were out hit 8 to 2 with Chris Hege and Justin Johnson singling. Cullen McBride went 6 1/3 innings, allowing 2 hits with 8 strikeouts. Braden Lofollette took the loss, allowing 3 runs on 3 hits.
