Kuemper at LoMa

LoMa             7

Kuemper      3

The Kuemper Knights had a tough road challenge to open up the 2023 season as they fell to LoMa Monday night.

The Panthers got on the board early in the first half, scoring two runners to lead early 2-0. They’d quickly add five more runs to that total in the bottom of the third and were ahead 7-0. They’d get those runs off four singles and two stolen bases. Melinda Schaefer and Ally Sommerfeld shared the pitching duties in this game and allowed seven hits and recorded three strikeouts total. Kuemper was able to respond in the top of the fourth inning when Kaci Peter got home off a wild pitch to cut down the big LoMa lead to 7-1. The Knights added two additional late runs in the sixth inning to keep the hope of a late game comeback alive. Peter and Kaylie Diercksen both scored in the inning to cut down the Panther lead further to 7-3. The late comeback was cut short by LoMa who closed out the game in the top of the seventh to win it 7-3.

The Knights will start out the 2023 season with a 0-1 record. They are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to take on IKM-Manning.

Carroll at Gilbert

Gilbert          7

Carroll           0

The battle of the Tigers was a bit one-sided Monday night as Gilbert hosted Carroll.

Carroll’s offense struggled to find their way around the Gilbert pitchers. Gilbert picked up an unearned run with a two-out Carroll error to get them ahead 1-0. They’d add a two-run homer to their score to get ahead 3-0 in the bottom of the third. Carroll’s defense continued to see struggles in the bottom half of the fourth inning, giving up three more runs. Gilbert got those three runs off four hits and another error by Carroll to lead 6-0. One final run in the fifth inning gave Gilbert a cushioned 7-0 lead. After a shutout defensive effort, Gilbert was victorious 7-0.

Carroll starts off the 2023 season at 0-1. They look for redemption when they take on Denison Schleswig on Tuesday, May 23rd at home.

Glidden Ralston at Madrid

Glidden Ralston      8

Madrid                     1

Glidden Ralston had little issues keeping Madrid at bay as they started the 2023 season at 1-0.

The Wildcats got the game started off in the top of the first inning where they brought home two runners to lead 2-0. They’d add another run after a lengthy scoring drought in the fourth inning to lead 3-0. Madrid’s offense was unable to get much accomplished with Vanessa Koehler in the circle. Koehler allowed four hits and only one earned run in her 13 strikeout night. The Tigers were eventually able to get a runner home in the bottom of the sixth, that was quickly trounced by the Wildcats’ five-run seventh inning. Ashlynn Tigges had a great night at the plate goin 3-4 with two runs scored, a double, and three RBI. Eighth grader Jaelyn Subbert showed early potential going 2-4 with a run scored, two doubled, and two RBIs. After their big late game surge, the Wildcats claimed victory with an 8-1 win.

The Wildcats start off the season at 1-0. They are back in action on Tuesday, May 23rd when they host South Central Calhoun.

Audubon at Earlham

Earlham            6

Audubon          3

The Audubon Wheelers had a solid late game comeback going their way in the fifth inning, but they were stopped short by Earlham Monday.

The Cardinals got their party started early with three runs scored in the bottom of the first inning. They’d get a runner home off an RBI double from Haley Glade, she was brought home by a single from Katie Janssen, and Janssen was brought home off a grounder from Kenady Ridout. Earlham added two more runs to their lead in the bottom of the third and fourth innings to lead 5-0 before Audubon got on the board. After a single from Jordan Mulford brought home Michelle Brooks, Mattie Nielsen hit a greatly needed triple to the right side to bring home Anna Larsen and Mulford and cut down the large Earlham lead down to 5-3.

Earlham’s offense was able to get one more run added to their lead and they stayed ahead with some solid defensive playing. The Cardinals escaped a scare by the Wheelers to win it 6-3. Kali Irlmeier suffered the loss for the Wheelers, giving up four hits, four runs, three of those were earned along with recording two strikeouts. In four innings of work Alexis Obermeier had a solid outing with three hits allowed, two runs, one earned, and seven strikeouts.

CAM-Anita      9

Ar-We-Va         1

The 2023 season for the Ar-We-Va Rockets was a tough one as they fell to CAM Anita Monday.

The Rockets gave Amber Ragaller the start on the hill for the Rockets and she started off strong. She started off with three strikeouts in the first two innings and the defense behind her closed out the bottom of the second inning with a ground out to first with bases loaded. In the bottom of the third, the Cougars brought the heat with three runs scored. Ragaller struggled with walks throwing four in that half inning, but she closed it out with a strikeout. CAM Anita added five more runs to their total in the bottom of the fourth with a big three RBI triple from Fullman. K. Platte would get another triple for another RBI for the Cougars as she extended the Cougars’ lead to 9-0.

Ar-We-Va had no answers offensively with their best chance coming and going in the top of the second where they left the bases loaded. The Rockets finally broke through in the top of the seventh when Karime Sanchez was retired and allowed Emma Leiting to score. The Rockets would later go down in order and would fall 9-1 to CAM Anita.

The Rockets begin the 2023 season with an 0-1 record. They are back in action on Wednesday, May 24th when they host Exira-EHK, their second game of four this week.

The Crusaders of Coon Rapids Bayard had many things go right offensively but couldn’t pair that with solid defense as they fell in their season opener to Exira-EHK Monday.

The Crusaders got their offense going in the top of the first inning with two runs to get ahead 2-0 early. The lead would soon be spoiled by Exira-EHK who had eight runs scored between the second and third innings. Anna Hart’s first start of the 2023 season was a tough pill to swallow, 11 runs allowed and 15 walks in total. The Crusaders would have some solid offense left in them later in the fourth and fifth innings, adding one and two runs respectively. After adding another three runs themselves, Exira-EHK would close out the game in the top of the seventh and win it 11-5. Hart offensively went 2-3 with two singles and a run scored and Aubrey Hofbauer also went 2-3 with two singles and a run scored.
