Softball Results for Tuesday, May 23rd

Denison Schleswig at Carroll

Carroll                          3

Denison Schleswig     2 (9 Innings)

Defense was the main attraction in Tuesday’s matchup between Carroll and Denison Schleswig as both teams needed extra innings to determine a winner.

The Tigers have recently dominated this series against the Monarchs, winning the last six games total. Both defenses were stone walls against the others’ offense and neither team were able to score. Carroll’s offense finally got a girl home when Averi Burke hit a great hit up the right-side gap to score Parker Adams and get herself an RBI triple. Carroll added to their 1-0 lead with another run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Makalei Kofron got on base and was brought home off a fielder’s choice.

Denison Schleswig’s bats suddenly came alive in the top of the sixth inning as they tied the game up at 2-2. Ashlyn Herrig, who was 0-2 at the time, hit a big triple and was brought home off a sac fly by Maya Slater to cut the lead in half at 2-1. Kaitlyn Bruhn was able to double off of Burke and was brought home by Kaylee Baker off an RBI single to even the game up at 2-2. Burke to that point was commanding the Monarch batters, and she lost a bit of her control. She gained it right back after some sticky situations in later innings. She’d strike out the last two batters in the seventh inning to retire the Monarchs, got another strikeout in the eighth along with seeing line drive to Camryn Schable go their way, and with runners at second and third, conjured up a tag out at third along with a great 1-3 play to end the top of the ninth.

The Tigers had a few chances to walk off the game in the seventh and eighth but both times they went down in order. Burke was able to get the offense sparked with a walk, but she got a little too excited and was tagged out at third trying to steal home off a bunt by Ava Gross. After the tag out at third, Gross advanced to second base, setting up another walk off opportunity. Kofron stepped up to the plate once again, already at 2-3 on the day. She got the ball she was looking for and crushed a deep shot to the right-side warning tracks to bring home Gross and win the game for Carroll 3-2.

The Tigers capture their first win of the season and are now 1-1 overall. They will have a rematch of last year’s regional championship Wednesday night as they travel to take on ADM.

That final score is not a figment of your imagination, the Underwood Eagles got past the IKM-Manning Wolves in a regular season softball game Tuesday night.

After insanely high scores and long nine inning games already this season, this one takes the cake as the highest scoring game this season by a long shot. The East Sac Raiders had everything go their way Tuesday night as they cruised past Manson NW Webster in their season opener.

The Raiders had plenty of talent from last year’s team return better than ever in their first game of the season. Manson NW Webster responded in the bottom half of the third inning and tied the game at 2-2. The Raiders had a massive response for those runs as they regained the lead and kept it with eight runs added to their total. Audubon at AHSTW

Audubon          5

AHSTW             3

The Wheelers faced some early challenges from AHSTW Tuesday night, but in the final two innings they pulled out enough runs to win it on the road.

The Wheelers came off a tough loss to Earlham the night before and didn’t want history to repeat itself. AHSTW looked solid early on with three runs scored by the third inning. The Vikings grounded out to score a runner in the second inning and later in the third they scored one off a wild pitch and another off a sacrifice fly. The Wheelers defense turned a new leaf from there on out and kept AHSTW at bay. The Vikings got a runner to third base in the fourth and sixth innings but didn’t get that baserunner home.

The Wheelers offense finally had everything click in the top of the sixth when Kali Irlmeier got home off a grounder from Alexis Obermeier. They’d still train 3-1 heading into the seventh inning. After two outs, the rally began for the Wheelers as Anna Larsen was brought home off an RBI single from Mattie Nielsen. Jordan Porsch had herself a single as did Irlmeier that scored Nielsen to give Audubon the 4-3 lead. After a few walks by the AHSTW pitcher, Audubon was ahead 5-3 after Irlmeier crossed home plate. Alexis Obermeier closed out the game with a solid finish with two strikeouts to secure the 5-3 win on the road.

The Wheelers improve to 1-1 overall on the season. They are back in action on Thursday, May 25th when they travel to take on Riverside.
