Pitching dominated most of the game with the teams combining to strikeout 25 times. Coon Rapids Bayard out hit the Wolves 5-1 and used a tough defensive inning in the 6th to stretch the lead and start the season 1-0. Cooper Perdew pitched well for the Wolves, getting the first-two batters of the game out. He made one mistake, leaving a pitch over the plate to Lance Clayburg who drilled a home run, giving the Crusaders a 1-0 lead. Perdew settled in and struck out the next six batters he faced. Cal Heydon got the start on the mound for Coon Rapids Bayard, struggling at times to find the zone but pitching himself out of trouble. He walked two guys in the 1st inning but didn’t give up any hits, getting out of the inning with no runs. The Wolves only had one baserunner in the 2nd and 3rd innings combined. Coon Rapids Bayard threatened in the 3rd with Kolby Culbertson moving to 3rd base but Perdew shut the door and the game went to the 4th, still 1-0 Coon Rapids Bayard. The Crusaders broke through in the 4th. Cade Behrens reached on a fielders choice, Parker Hays singled and Wyatt Oswald was hit-by-pitch, loading the bases. Cade Behrens scored on a wild pitch, that moved Hays to 3rd. Hays scored on a fly ball to right field from Mason Culbertson. IKM-Manning answered in the bottom 4th. Cooper Perdew singled and scored later in the inning on a passed ball. The Crusaders stretched the lead in the 6th on three hits and three Wolves errors. Gavin Heiderscheit drove in a run for the Crusaders with a base hit, making it 6-1. Kasche Huehn walked for IKM-Manning in the bottom 6th and scored later on a wild pitch, cutting the deficit for IKM-Manning to 6-2. Cade Behrens closed the door on the Wolves in the bottom 7th, ending the game with a pair of strikeouts.

Lance Clayburg helped pace the Crusaders with a solo home run while Parker Hays had a pair of hits and scored twice. Gavin Heiderscheit added a base hit and a RBI. Cal Heydon got the win, going 4 innings, allowing 1 earned run while striking out 7.

Cooper Perdew had the Wolves lone hit and scored one of their two runs. Kasche Huehn scored their other run. Perdew took the loss, going 5 innings, allowing 3 earned runs on 2 hits and 3 walks.

The Crusaders are 1-0 and host Glidden Ralston on Wednesday. IKM-Manning is 0-1 and will host Underwood on Tuesday.

Audubon at Griswold

After a grueling nine inning game against Glidden Ralston the day prior, the Audubon Wheelers got the job done in five innings against Griswold Tuesday. 

Along with solid hitting on the night, the Wheelers were able to defensively shut out the Tigers. The Wheelers quickly got on the board in the top of the first inning with three runs and soon were ahead 7-0 by the third inning. Griswold fought back in the third inning with two runs to make it a manageable 7-2 deficit. Zane Johnson and Cash Turner were responsible for those RBIs that brought home Johnson and Wyman. 

Audubon’s offense really came alive in the fifth inning when they went on a seven run spree that got them ahead 14-2. Colton Hansen had the most impressive night offensively going 3-4 with six RBIs. Evan Alt was perfect 2-2 with a double and triple, an RBI, and two runs scored. Defensively, it was Adam Obrecht who stole the show. He only allowed three hits, one earned run, and recorded five strikeouts, allowing the guys behind him to put in some solid work. After one final defensive push, the Wheelers were victorious in five innings with a final score of 14-2. The Wheelers are now 2-0 to start off the 2023 season.

They are back in action on Monday, May 22nd when they travel to take on Earlham.
