Kuemper Catholic entered their season opener ranked 3rd according to the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association. The Knights showed the heart of a team, poised to make a run this season, battling back after a tough top of the 1st inning and an error in the 6th that helped Des Moines Christian tie the game. The Lions scored their first three batters of the game on three straight hits, an out, then a hit followed by a Sac Fly. The Knights didn’t panic, responding in the bottom half with 4 runs, thanks to a little help from Des Moines Christian. Logan Sibenaller and Koby Lampman walked. Sibenaller stole 3rd and the ball was thrown into left field, scoring Sibenaller and moving Trevor Rial, who had singled to 3rd and Lampman to 2nd. Rial scored on a wild pitch, then Max Irlmeier drove in Koby Lampman, tying the game. The Knights took the lead on a single by Josh Langel that scored Tristan Janson, who had run for Irlmeier after he moved to 3rd with 2 outs. Pitching took over after the 1st inning, with Kuemper having one baserunner in the 2nd through 5th innings when Trevor Rial reached on a base hit. Sibenaller was just as dominant on the hill for Kuemper, holding Des Moines Christian to three hits and three baserunners from the 2nd to the 5th innings. Kuemper made a couple nice defensive plays to keep the Lions at bay. The Lions squeezed in a run in the 6th, thanks to some help from Kuemper. Zayne Beal walked and took 3rd on a pickoff move that went into foul territory up the right field side. He scored on a sac fly from Ty Swaim and Des Moines Christian tied the game at 4. The Knights were quick to answer in the bottom 6th. Cooper Pottebaum worked a leadoff walk, was bunted to 2nd by Ethan Loew, then moved to 3rd on a wild pitch. Evan Loew drove him in with a fielder’s choice, giving Kuemper a 5-4 lead. Des Moines Christian had one last chance, Jack Isenhart singled to start the inning but was thrown out trying to steal 2nd base. Brady Andrews struck out for the 2nd out but Jack Schmatlz and Ty Andrews both singled to put runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs. Logan Sibenaller bared down and struck out Tyler Martin to end the game.
Trevor Rial led the Knights with a pair of hits while Max Irlmeier and Josh Langel both had a base hit. Langel and Irlmeier added RBI each. Logan Sibenaller, Trevor Rial, Koby Lampman, Cooper Pottebaum and Tristan Janson scored for Kuemper. Sibenaller went the distance, allowing 9 hits, 3 earned runs with 6 strikeouts and 2 walks.
The Knights are 1-0 and will host LoMa on Thursday.

After nine long innings that lasted three and a half hours, the Audubon Wheelers were able to pull out a nail biter of a win all while not leading once during their game against Glidden Ralston Monday.
The Wildcats were on the losing end a year prior to the Wheelers 10-4 and they looked for a better outcome this year. They started out with some steam as the Wheelers’ pitching squad struggled to start. After the first two batters were walked, Jackson Sklenar took advantage of the situation and hit a deep ball to the fence for a two RBI double to give his team the early 2-0 lead. Glidden Ralston added one more run to their total when the bases were loaded and John Whitver was hit by pitch to bring Sklenar home, making the lead 3-0. Audubon’s response in the bottom half of the first inning was an RBI double from Gavin Larsen to cut the lead down to 3-1.
Glidden Ralston kept the bases loaded in the second inning with more woes from pitcher Brody Schultes. He had three more walks along with another hit batter to give another run to Glidden Ralston, giving them the 4-1 lead. Audubon’s luck changed quickly in the bottom half of the second inning when Adam Obrecht brought Carson Wessel home off an RBI single and a big play from Aaron Olsen. Olsen took a deep shot to right field that went over the head of Lucas Christian that allowed Obrecht and himself to score, tying the game up at 4-4. The Wildcats didn’t let the game stay tied for long as they again were the beneficiaries of more mistakes from the Audubon defense and saw Chandler Grossman score off a wild pitch to give the Wildcats the lead back at 5-4.
Aaron Olsen eventually found his way on the pitching mound and was able to swing some momentum back to the Wheelers’ side. In four innings of work, he gave the Wheelers 11 strikeouts and only two walks total which allowed the Wheelers to re-tie the game. In the bottom of the fifth, Audubon was also able to score a runner off a wild pitch when Larsen came in to score and tie the game at 5-5. The Wheelers nearly got another runner home to take their first lead, but Johnny Bergmeier made a diving catch to keep the game tied at five runs. Both teams didn’t see any movement in the sixth inning, and again the game was tied up when both teams scored two runs. Glidden Ralston had the bases filled again off of walks from Larsen on the mound and brought two home to lead 7-5 momentarily. Audubon too was able to load up the bases after Colby Wallace was through pitching for the night and Mark Lensch took his place. Lensch struggled at first and had four walks in the top of the seventh and gave up two runs that tied the game back up to 7-7. Audubon nearly walked off with a win in the seventh, but a swing and miss by Obrecht brought the game into extra innings.
Glidden Ralston had bases loaded in the top of the eighth, but a close 1-3 play ended the inning. Audubon went in order and Lensch had two strikeouts added to his night. In the ninth, Glidden Ralston too went down in order with strikeouts from Larsen. The Wheelers again had a chance to walk it off and this time, only needed one run. After loading up the bases, Larsen was retired off a 6-2 play that got him out at home. Jay Remsburg tried to steal home but was tagged out by Sklenar. After nearly three and a half hours, the Wheelers were able to claim victory after Brody Schultes hit the game winning RBI single off a blooper to right field to score Obermeier and win it 8-7, their only lead of the game.
The Wheelers start out the season 1-0 while the Wildcats will start out 0-1. The Wheelers are back in action on Tuesday, May 16th when they take on Griswold while Glidden Ralston is in action on Wednesday, May 17th when they travel to take on Coon Rapids Bayard.
