Girls Tennis Regionals for Wednesday, May 10th
Class 1A – Audubon and Kuemper at Atlantic
Singles and doubles competitors from Audubon and Kuemper competed for a chance to compete at state during their regional meet at Atlantic.
Kaylie Simons and Keziah Janssen were the singles players for the Knights and both won their first matches of the day. Simons in the play-in game was able to easily get past Abigail Martin of Shenandoah 6-0, 6-2. In the first round, Audrey Jensen of Audubon got past Simons after a tough 4-6, 6-2, 12-10 game, ending her individual season. Janssen played her first game in the first round and had to endure a long back-and-forth to start the day. While up against Sammy Swensen of Harlan, Janssen was able to survive with a 6-4, 5-7, 10-6 win to advance to the quarterfinals. In the next round, Janssen ran into a wall in Riley Northwehr of Clarinda where she lost 6-1, 6-2, and was put into the third-place game. In that third-place match, Jensen took on Riley Northwehr from Clarinda
In doubles for Kuemper, both teams, Sophie Rohe and Ella Schwarte and Sophie Tidgren and Brooke Rohe, were able to make the quarterfinals before being eliminated. Sophie Rohe and Schwarte were able to get past Emma Olsen and Auri Towbridge of Shenandoah 6-2, 6-3 in the first round, but struggled against Mayson Hartley and Taylor Cole of Clarinda in the quarterfinals losing 6-1, 6-1. For Tidgren and Brooke Rohe They too had an easy first-round match, defeating Quincy Sorenson and Jade Harter of Atlantic 6-3, 6-1, but ultimately fell in the quarterfinals after a tough 7-5, 7-5 loss to Georgie Bohnet and Lexi Narmi of St Albert.
For the Audubon Wheelers, Jensen and Geralyn Anderson played in singles. Anderson was unable to get through to the quarterfinals as she fell to Mallory Kieldgaard of Lewis Central 6-1, 6-2. For Jensen, she found her way to the semifinals. She got past Simons of Kuemper 4-6, 6-2, 12-10 in the first round, and handled Erica Rust of Harlan in the quarterfinals 6-2, 6-2. Jensen was up against the number one seeded player Lanee Olsen of Lewis Central where Olsen defeated Jensen 7-5, 6-2. Jensen finished her long day against Riley Northwehr of Clarinda in the 3rd place match. She won the first set 6-2, but dropped the 2nd set 6-2, forcing her to play a tie-breaking 3rd set. Jensen won the tie-breaker 11-9 to finish in 3rd place.
In doubles, both teams lost their first match of the day and saw an early elimination. In the play-in game, Jordan Porsch and Joselynn Moreno fell to Sorenson and Harter of Atlantic 6-1, 7-5. In the first round, Ava Slater and Rachael Rynearson were pitted against Mayson Hartley and Taylor Cole of Clarinda. The Cardinals’ duo handed the Audubon duo a swift exit with a 6-0, 6-1 win.
