Class 1A Districts – Audubon at Kuemper

A ticket to the state tennis tournament was hanging in the balance Monday when Audubon and Kuemper’s singles and doubles competitors fought for a chance to continue their individual seasons.

Kuemper nearly had two players heading to state in singles but they ended up sending one. Mason Reicks was the 16 seed going into the district tournament, and he fought all the way to the championship game. He took down number one seed Caleb Frostestad of Spirit Lake 2-6, 6-4, 7-5, got past Jackson of Audubon 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinals, and defeated Nolan Waters of Atlantic 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinals to secure a spot at the state tournament and play for a district crown. The miraculous run from Reicks came to a victorious conclusion in the championship game where he took on Clevi Johnson from Atlantic. Reicks had no issues getting past Johnson 6-3, 6-2 to capture the district championship. He will compete at the state tennis tournament coming up from May 31st-June 1st.

Hans Kraus got to the semifinals but had to forfeit due to medical issues. Kraus was seeded third and swept Andrew Anderson of Harlan 6-0, 6-0 in the first round and got past Quinn Baker of Spencer 6-7, 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. He was taking on Clevi Johnson of Atlantic in the semifinals when he had to take a medical forfeit which end his individual season.

In doubles, the Knights got a duo team to the semifinals but did not see them advance to state. The team of Josh Langel and Jake Hausman was the four-seed in the bracket and had a battle in the first round. The Kuemper duo took on Easton O’Brien and Kinnick Juhl of Atlantic and were able to squeeze past them 6-2, 7-5. In the quarterfinals, Langel and Hausman took on Jace Krogh and Rylan Culp of Ballard and while it took three sets, the Kuemper duo won 2-6, 6-0, 6-2. The semifinals were tough for Langel and Hausman as they were up against the number one seeded duo Owen Kierscht and Riley DeWitt of Spencer and ended up falling 6-2, 6-1 to knock them to the third-place match. That match featured Langel and Hausman up against Emmett Miller and Dawson Berkke of Ballard where the duo from Kuemper rounded out a solid tournament by finishing third with a 6-2, 6-2 win.

Max Reincke and Braxton Lu saw an early exit from the district bracket as they took on the number two-seeded duo out of Spencer, Sam Feldman, and Parker Bergstadt. Reincke and Lu were swept 6-0, 6-0, and were knocked out of the tournament.

Audubon’s Isaac Jackson came in as the eighth seed in the district tournament and he was able to pick up a convincing 6-0, 6-1 win over Colton Hagle of Harlan. In the quarterfinals, Jackson was handed a tough loss by Mason Reicks of Kuemper where Reicks won 6-1, 6-0, ending Jackson’s individual season. Eli Deist wasn’t so lucky in his first-round game when he took on seven-seeded Clevi Johnson of Atlantic and saw his season come to an end too with a 6-0, 6-2 loss.

In doubles, the Wheelers got a team through to the quarterfinals when Sawyer McClain and Connor Christensen got past Keyton Francis and Eric Torneton of Harlan 6-2, 6-3. Their momentum was halted in the next round when Sam Feldman and Parker Bergstadt of Spencer swept the Audubon duo 6-0, 6-0 to end their season. Carson Matthews and Tommy Hogue saw the same fate as they were defeated 6-0, 6-0 by Owen Kiersht and Riley DeWitt of Spencer in the first round.
