Kuemper hosts Hawkeye 10 Conference Tournament

The Kuemper Knights gave it all they got Wednesday as they hosted the Hawkeye 10 Conference Tournament once again. The Knights were able to advance to the semifinals in singles #2 and doubles #2, but both fell into the consolation bracket to play for third place.

In singles #2, Keziah Janssen, the 11 seed, got past Emma Stogdill of Clarinda with no problems in the first round winning 8-2 and fought well in the quarterfinals against Auri Trowbridge of Shenandoah with an 8-6 win to advance to the semifinals. Janssen went up against a tough opponent in Mallory Kjeldgaard of Lewis Central where she fell 8-3, knocking her into the third place match against Josie Mahn of Creston. Mahan took no time in defeating Janssen, winning 8-0, giving Janssen a hard fought fourth place finish on the day.

In Doubles #2, Sophie Tidgren and Brooke Rohe got a first round bye by being the four-seed in the tournament. In the quarterfinals, they were easily able to get past Kate Hughes and Addie Newberry of Glenwood with an 8-2 win, but couldn’t get past the semifinals as they lost to  Avery Walter and Brooke Brown of Clarinda 8-2. The Kuemper duo were knocked into the third place match and took on Brooklyn Damgaard and Lani Bergantzel of Lewis Central. The Lewis Central duo were able to pick up the 8-4 win and gave Tidgren and Rohe a fourth place finish in the tournament.

Kaylie Simons was in singles #1 as the five seed and had a tough game against Erica Rust of Harlan. Simons was close to victory but came up short losing 8-6 and was knocked into the consolation bracket. She battled all the way through the bracket to reach the fifth place match against Wingfield of Red Oak. Simons got past Emma Ahrenholtz of Denison Schleswig 8-4 in the consolation quarterfinals and then Caitlin Bruce of Creston in the consolation semifinals 8-5. Simons was up against Grace Wingfield of Red Oak in the fifth place game where Simons lost 9-8 in a back-and-forth game, but she took home sixth place overall.

Sophie Rohe and Ella Schwarte were in doubles #1 as the six seed and were able to get into the quarterfinals with a win over Scarlett McGuiness and Sydney Jones of Harlan 8-2. They ran into some trouble against M. Tamer and Tessa Rolnec of Red Oak when the Kuemper duo lost 8-2 and were put into the consolation bracket’s semifinals. They’d take on Brooke Hays and Gabi Jacobs of Shenandoah and easily come away with the win 8-2 and advance to the fifth round match to take on Georgie Bohnet and Alexis Narmi of St Alberts. Rohe and Schwarte had some pushback from Bohnet and Narmi, but they eventually got the job done with a 8-4 win and finished fifth overall in doubles #1.
