Area Football Schedule Breakdown for 2023

Carroll Broadcasting Sports Network broke down the schedules for all 9 of our area football teams for the 2023 season. Check out the breakdown and schedule for each team below.

Carroll  High- Class 3A District 1 

Carroll High has to like this year’s travel though their District, Class 3A District 1 didn’t change at all. Carroll gets five home games this fall and travels four times including district games at Heelan in Week 6 and Sioux Center in Week 8. Carroll adds two more road trips in the non-district portion of their schedule, going to Gilbert in Week 2 and At Denison Schleswig in Week 3. Carroll is hosting Greene County to open the season and closes out the non-district schedule, hosting Creston in Week 4.  The Tigers two toughest non-district games based off last season are at home with Greene County going 8-2 last season, losing in the playoffs and Creston also making the playoffs, finishing 6-4 with 3 straight losses. Gilbert and Denison Schleswig both finished below 500 and didn’t qualify for the postseason. Gilbert went 1-8 and Denison Schleswig, who will be breaking in a  new head coach finished 4-5. Carroll district schedule rotates back and forth with home games in Week’s 5, 7 and 9 and road games in Weeks 6 and 8. They open with MOC Floyd Valley at home. The Tigers dropped last season’s matchup, 14-0, ending their playoffs dreams. The Dutchmen finished the season 6-4 with a loss in the 1st round of the playoffs. Carroll goes to Heelan in Week 6, looking for revenge, dropping last seasons game 9-6. The Crusaders lost their first-4 games last year, then dropped their last 3 to finish 2-7. Carroll beat Sergeant Bluff-Luton in the season finale last season, keeping them from the playoffs. The Warriors come to Carroll in Week 7, coming off a 3-6 season where they dropped their last 4, including a 24-19 loss to the Tigers. Sioux Center went 5-5 a season ago with a loss in the 1st round of the playoffs. They beat Carroll 25-0 as part of a 4 game winning streak to end the regular season. They host Carroll in Week 8. The Tigers end the regular season at home with Boyden Hull/Rock Valley who looks to bounce back from a disappointing 3-6 season last year. They fell to the Tigers 35-0. Carroll went 5-4 last season, missing the postseason.

Kuemper Catholic- Class 2A District 8 

Kuemper appears to have loaded up their non-district schedule as Class 2A, District 8 only has two teams that posted winning records last season. Kuemper finished 8-2 last season, losing to West Sioux in the 2nd round of the playoffs. Greene County also went 8-2 last season, falling in the postseason as well as losing 35-0 to Kuemper in the regular season. The Knights are on the road for 3 of their 5 district games but get to host 2 of their 3 non-district games. They open the season at Bishop Heelan, who finished last season 2-7 after losing their first- 4 games and last 3 games last season. Kuemper comes home for 2 straight games with Underwood, which went 11-1, losing to West Sioux in the semifinals last season. The Eagles were in Kuemper’s district last season and won the district by edging Kuemper 28-20 late in the season. The Knights lead most of that game but the Eagles rallied in the 2nd half. Things don’t get any easier in Week 3 with the Knights hosting AHSTW. The Vikings were Class A a year ago, going 10-1, losing to Lynnville Sully in the quarterfinals. Kuemper opens district play on the road in Week’s 4 and 5. They go to Roland Story in Week 4. The Norsemen were 4-5 last season, dropping 3 straight including a 1st round playoff game. Greene County will have a chance for revenge in Week 5 when they host the Knights. The Rams were flying high before a 35-0 loss to Kuemper. That win helped propel the Knights on their run. The Knights return home in Week 6, hosting Des Moines Christian.  The Lions made the playoffs a year ago, finishing the season 4-5, including dropping their last 3 games. Saydel is up next for Kuemper. The Eagles were 0-9 last year, scoring 26-points all season. Week 8 could be intriguing. Southeast Valley travels to Kuemper coming off a 3-5 season that included 4 losses in a row in the middle of the season. They are traditionally a strong team and will be expected to bounce back this fall.

East Sac- Class 1A District 2

East Sac is in a completely new district this season and the schedule looks much more manageable. The Raiders will have to travel much less with their longest road trip to Missouri Valley in Week 3 for a non-district matchup. They also travel to IKM-Manning (non-district), Emmetsburg and Manson NW Webster. The Emmetsburg and Missouri Valley games are about an hour and half for each trip while the other two road games are about a half hour away. The Raiders went 2-7 last year, winning their last 2 regular season games to qualify for the playoffs. They open the season at IKM-Manning, a great local matchup that hasn’t been played for a few seasons. These two teams enjoy playing each other and usually play competitive games. The Wolves were 2-7 last year but rolled by St Albert in Week 9 after losing 4 in a row. They were young last season and could be poised for a turn around season. OA-BCIG comes to East Sac in Week 2. The Falcons have been an elite team for several years and last season went 10-2, losing in the semifinals to Central Lyon-George Little Rock. They beat the Raiders last season 54-7. East Sac closes out their non-district games at Missouri Valley, who finished 0-9 last year, allowing 40 or more points in 7 games. The Raiders open the district schedule with one of their two district road trips. They travel to Emmetsburg, which went 4-5 last season, losing to Kuemper in the 1st round. They had won 3 of their last 4 regular season games. The Raiders are home for two in a row, hosting Pocahontas Area (4-4), who dropped 4 in a row late last season before winning their final game. Eagle Grove is a much improved program and comes to Wall Lake in Week 6. They went 3-6 last year, falling in the opening round. They lost their last 2 games. East Sac visits Manson NW Webster in Week 7. The Cougars were 1-7 last season, scoring under 15 points in all but one game. The final game of  the regular season is at home against Sioux Central, Sioux Rapids. They went 2-7 last year, dropping their final 5 games, getting shutout in 3 of those games. The Raiders only play one team they played last season.

East Sac Schedule

IKM-Manning- Class A District 7

IKM-Manning went 2-7 last season but closed the year with a big win over St Albert in a Week 9 game. The Wolves were young and are poised for a turnaround season. Last year IKM-Manning was shutout 3 times but lost 3 other games by 11 points or less. Their schedule this season looks much different than last season with only LoMa returning to the schedule. The Wolves will see teams they played in years past, including renewing rivalries with East Sac, ACGC and South Central Calhoun, who they matched up with for a couple years a few seasons ago. They open the season with a non-district game against East Sac, then play 6 straight district games before closing out the season with a non-district game against LoMa.

IKM-Manning will host East Sac who went 2-7, losing in the 1st round last season. These two schools have played several times in the last decade with most of those games well played and competitive. They open district play at Panorama who went 3-6 last season. The Panthers were in Class 1A a year ago. They lost 6 in a row before winning their last 2 games. Earlham comes to town in Week 3, having gone 3-6 a year ago. They dropped 6 straight before winning their last 2 last season. They were held to 3 points or less in 3 of those losses. The Wolves  head to Riverside who struggled on defense a year ago, finishing 2-7. South Central Calhoun comes to IKM-Manning for the first time in over 5-years in Week 5. The Titans went 4-5 last year, losing to Western Christian in the 1st round of the Class 1A playoffs. The Wolves schedule is home, then away for 8 straight weeks, which means they head to ACGC in Week 6. The Chargers are a physical team that went 7-3 last season, losing to Underwood in the 2nd round of the playoffs in Class 1A last year. They had a 6 game winning streak, with 5 wins by 5-points or less. The Wolves host Southwest Valley in Week 7. They went 7-3 last year, falling in the 2nd round of the playoffs to Madrid. They pitched 4 shutouts last season. IKM-Manning closes out the season at LoMa, who beat them 29-18 a year ago. The Panthers won 4 in a row in the middle of last season before falling in the 1st round of the playoffs.

South Central Calhoun- Class A District 7

The Titans went 4-5 last year in Class 1A, but drop to Class A this season. They made the playoffs last year, falling to Western Christian in the 1st round. Pocahontas Area hosts the Titans in a non-district matchup and is the Titans only game from last seasons schedule. The Indians beat the Titans last season 30-6 as part of winning their first- 3 games, they lost 4 in a row, then won their last game to go 4-4. Pocahontas Area scored 12-points or less in 5 games last season. The Titans are on the road in Week 2, traveling to Southwest Valley to open districts. Southwest Valley was 7-3 last season, losing in the 2nd round of the playoffs to Madrid. Their defense pitched 4 shutouts last fall. The Titans first home game is Week 3 against Riverside. The Bulldogs were 2-7 last season, struggling on defense. ACGC and South Central Calhoun know each other well, having met in the postseason a couple seasons ago. The Charges are at the Titans in Week 4, coming off a 7-3 season, where they lost to Underwood in the 2nd round in Class 1A. They won 6 straight games last season with 5 of their 7 wins by 5 points or less. This could be a huge district matchup. A great local matchup occurs in Week 5 as the Titans head to IKM-Manning for a district game. The Wolves should be improved last season, after finishing 2-7 with a young team, They beat St Albert in Week9. IKM-Manning was shutout 3 times last season and lost 3 other games by 11 points or less. The Titans return home for their final non-district game of the regular season. They host traditional power West Hancock, who played for the State Title a year ago, falling to Grundy Center. They allowed single digits in 7 games last season. South Central Calhoun jumps back into their district at Panorama in Week 7. The Panther were 3-6 last year, dropping 6 straight in Class 1A, before winning their last 2. Earlham comes to Lake City for the final regular season game. The Cardinals were 3-6 a year ago, dropping 6 straight, scoring 3 points or less in 3 of those losses. They  won their last 2 games.

South Central Calhoun Schedule

Ar-We-Va- 8-Man District 1 

The Rockets went 3-5 last season, dropping their final 3 games with the last game by forfeit. They went 2-3 against teams they will face this season with two of those losses against Remsen St Mary’s and Newell Fonda. The Rockets allowed over 50-points in all 4 losses (games they played). The Rockets open this season with their two non-district games, hosting Exira-EHK in Week 1, then going to Glidden Ralston in Week 2. The Spartans were 4-4 last season, dropping 3 in a row in the middle of the season. The Wildcats went 3-5, including a 38-28 loss at Ar-We-Va. Glidden Ralston dropped their last 3 games. Their six district games begin with a home game against Siouxland Christian. They finished 2-7 last season, allowing 44-points or more in all 7 losses, including a 44-20 loss to Ar-We-Va. Ar-We-Va goes on the road in Week 4 Vs West Harrison, Week 6 Vs Remsen St Mary’s and Week 8 against Boyer Valley. West Harrison graduates a great senior class that helped them finish last season 9-1, losing to GTRA in the 2nd round. The Hawkeyes scored 29 or more points in all 9 wins. Remsen St Mary’s is the defending State Champion, going 13-0. They beat the Rockets 75-0 last season. Their final road game is against a Boyer Valley team that went 2-6 last season. The Bulldogs lost 4 in a row after winning their season opener. They topped the Rockets 54-7 last season. Ar-We-Va host Woodbine in Week 5. The Tigers were 3-6 last season, winning 2 of their last 3. Newell Fonda travels to Westside in Week 7. They were 10-2 last season, falling in the semifinals to Waco, Wayland. Their 2 losses were to State Champion Remsen St Mary’s and runner-up Waco. The Mustangs picked up a forfeit win over the Rockets in Week 8 last season. Ar-We-Va was very young last season and should be improved this season, having played a lot of freshman last year.

Audubon- 8-Man District 9

Audubon went 4-6 last season, falling to State Champion Remsen St Mary’s in the 1st Round. Every loss for the Wheelers came to a playoff team. Audubon will see a different look this season, not going south for their district games. They will see extremely long trips to the east with games at Colo-Nesco and Collins Maxwell. Teams on this year’s schedule went 35-32 a year ago. They travel back-to-back in weeks 2 and 3, traveling to Colo-Nesco and Exira-EHK. The Wheelers face familiar foes in the non-district with CAM Anita coming to town Week 1. The Cougars were 7-3 last year, falling to Lenox in the 2nd round. They beat the Wheelers 42-8 last season and won 5 games in a row. Audubon goes to Exira-EHK in Week 3. The Wheelers won 64-30 last season as the Spartans dropped 3 in a row in weeks 4-6. They finished the season 4-4. The Wheelers open district play in Week 2, traveling to Colo-Nesco. They went 4-5 last season, falling in the 1st round. Their offense showed explosiveness last season, scoring 78 or more points in 2 games. Audubon closes the regular season with 5 straight district games. They host St Edmond (4-4) in Week 4, The Gaels went 4-4 last season, allowing 62 or more points in all 4 losses. They head to Coon Rapids Bayard for the annual rivalry game. The Wheelers won 66-30 last year. CRB went 3-5 with 4 straight losses. The struggled on offense, scoring under 20 points in 3 of 4 games. They dropped their last 4 games. Audubon hosts Glidden Ralston in Week 6. The Wildcats 3-5 last season, dropping their last 3 games. They allowed more than 61 points in those losses. Glidden Ralston scored in single digits in 3 games. Collins-Maxwell hosts Audubon in Week 7. They were 3-5 last season, losing their last 4 games, giving up 58 or more points. Baxter made the playoffs last season, going 7-2, falling in the 1st round to CAM Anita. They lost 2 of their last 3 games, though they were strong offensively, scoring 60 or more points in 6 games.

Coon Rapids Bayard- 8-Man District 9

The Crusaders battled injuries last season, causing them to drop their last 4 games to finish 3-5. They scored under 20-points in 3 of their last 4 losses. They had to forfeit their season opener, which they had won. They open the season for the 3rd straight year, playing at Valley Stadium on Saturday, August 26th. The Crusaders take on Turkey Valley, Jackson Junction, who finished 7-2 last season, They fell in the 2nd round after having won 6 in a row. The Crusaders other non-district game comes in Week 4 at CAM Anita. The Cougars fell in the 2nd round last postseason, finishing the season 7-3. They beat Coon Rapids Bayard 68-14 as part of a 5-game winning streak. With the game at Valley, the Crusaders only have 3 home games. They host Collins Maxwell in Week 3. They lost their last 4 games, finishing 3-5. They gave up 58 ore more points in their last 4 games. Audubon comes to Coon Rapids Bayard for their annual rivalry game on September 22nd, Week 5. The Wheelers were 4-6 last season, with one of their wins against the Crusaders, winning 66-30. The Wheelers lost in the 1st round a year ago. The Crusaders final home game of the regular season is against Colo-Nesco in Week 8. Colo-Nesco went 4-5 a season ago, losing in the 1st round. They scored 78 or more points in 2 games.  Coon Rapids Bayard opens districts in Week 2 at Baxter who finished 7-2 last year; losing to CAM Anita in the 1st round. Baxter dropped 2 of their last 3 games, allowing 60 or more points in 6 games. The Crusaders are on the road in Weeks 6 and 7 at St Edmond (4-4) and Glidden Ralston (3-5). The Gaels allowed 62 or more points in all 4 losses. The Wildcats dropped their final 3 games, scoring in single digits 3 times and allowing 61 or more point 3 times. The Crusaders had to forfeit their game against the Wildcats last season.

Coon Rapids Bayard Schedule

Glidden Ralston- 8-Man District 9

Glidden Ralston dropped their last 3 games to finish last season 3-5. They struggled on offense, scoring in single digits in 3 games, while allowing 61 or more points in 3 games. Their two non-district games start their season. They head to Woodbine in Week 1, then host Ar-We-Va in Week 2. The Tigers were 3-6 last season, winning 3 of their last 5 games. They struggled scoring early in the season, scoring 16 or less in their first 3 games. The Wildcats fell 38-28 to Ar-We-Va a year ago. The Rockets went 3-5 with a young team and expect to be better this season. Glidden Ralston gets to stay home to open district play, hosting Colo-Nesco. They went 4-5 last year, falling in the 1st round. They scored 78 or more points in 2 games. The Wildcats travel a few hours east in Week 4, going to Baxter, who finished 7-2 last season. They lost to CAM Anita in the 1st round, losing for the second time in their last three games. They did score 60 or more points in 6 game last season. The Wildcats are home in Weeks 5 and 7, hosting Collins Maxwell and Coon Rapids Bayard respectively. Collins Maxwell was 3-5 last season, dropping their last 4 games, where they gave up 58 or more points. The Crusaders were 3-5 a year ago, with one of their losses a forfeit to Glidden Ralston. Coon Rapids Bayard lost their last 4 games after suffering injury issues. The Wildcats will travel in Weeks 6 and 8 against Audubon and St Edmond. The Wheelers were 4-6 last year, making the postseason and falling at State Champion Remsen St Mary’s in the 1st round. St Edmond went 4-4, allowing 62 or more points in their 4 losses. The Wildcats will in their 2nd year under Head Coach Kreg Lensch.
