Bishop Heelan 61

Carroll High 51

Carroll High played well but fell a little short on Thursday, falling to Bishop Heelan in the Substate Semifinals. The Tigers held the lead twice and had the game tied three times in the 1st quarter, and entered the 4th quarter down by four. The defense stymied Matt Noll in the 2nd half, after giving up 18-points in the 1st half, holding him to a couple buckets in the closing minute of the game. The Crusaders didn’t shoot the ball well from the outside in the 1st half but hit 6-3’s in the 2nd  half including all night of their points in the 3rd quarter from beyond the arc. Bryce Berlau and Tanner Gotto scored well for Carroll in the 1st half with Berlau keeping the Tigers close in the 1st quarter and Gotto helping them battle back from down 8 in the 2nd quarter to trail by 5 at half, after a late bucket and free throw by Heelan extended their 2 point led.

Matt Noll hit a three for Heelan to open the scoring but Carroll responded with 4 straight, getting a bucket from Jack White and a Bryce Berlau jumper that put Carroll up 4-3. Heelan took the lead again at 5-4 but Carroll tied the game at 7 with a three from Berlau, again at 9 after a bucket from Trey Hunter. Carroll took their second lead of the game moments later when Tanner Gotto made it 11-9. Bryce Berlau gave Carroll their largest lead of the game at 14-9 but Heelan responded with a 9-0 run and scored 11 of the last 12 points in the 1st quarter to lead 20-15, heading to the 2nd quarter. Evan Hammer opened the 2nd quarter with a bucket for Carroll and Tanner Gotto pulled them within 1 with a pair of free throws. Heelan responded with a 6-0 run to lead 26-19. Evan Hammer cut it to 26-21 but Heelan grabbed their largest lead to that point in the game at 29-21. Tanner Gotto scored back-to-back buckets as Carroll crept back into the game. A Tanner Gotto three pulled Carroll within 31-29 but Carroll missed a shot with around 11 seconds left in the half and Noll was fouled while scoring on the other end. His free throw put Heelan up 34-29 at half.

Heelan sprinted out of the locker room in the 3rd quarter, going up 40-31 with a pair of quick threes. The Crusaders took their largest lead of the game on another three, up 43-33. Carroll didn’t flinch and battled back, pulling within 4 heading to the 4th quarter. Trey Hunter helped trim the deficit late in the 3rd, along with buckets and free throws from Evan Hammer. The final points of 3rd were scored by Payton Wardell off a nifty pass from Trey Hunter. Carroll had to feel good heading to the 4th quarter. A 5-0 Crusader run to start the 4th put Carroll behind the wall again. They trailed by 9 but cut it to 5 on buckets by Wardell and Bryce Berlau. Carroll had a shot down, 48-43 but couldn’t get any closer and Heelan built the lead back with a 5-0 run, putting them up 10. Carroll cut it to 7 but had to scramble on defense to try and come up with steals and Heelan got over the top of the pressure for a few easy baskets, extending the lead back to 10.

Tanner Gotto led Carroll with 13 points, 12 in the 1st half along with 6 rebounds. Bryce Berlau and Trey Hunter each had 10 points with Hunter adding 8 rebounds and 4 assists while Berlau finished with 3 steals. Evan Hammer added 8 points and 6 rebounds.

The loss ends the Tigers season at 12-10.
