South Central Calhoun vs Sioux Central at Storm Lake – Class 2A District 3 Final

Sioux Central 80

South Central Calhoun 59

The South Central Calhoun Titans were fighting for a chance at another Substate final as they took on a tough Sioux Central team that beat them in the regular season.

The Rebels were a perfect 22-0 going into this game and they were just as dominant as they were in the last game against the Titans. The Rebels got out quickly with a 6-0 lead. South Central Calhoun had a nice response with a 6-0 run of their own to tie the game at 6-6 with a bucket from Tyler Lightner. Jacob Hargens was a difference maker for the Rebels and he gave them the 8-6 lead before Joe Clark on the other end tied the game again at 8-8. After another tie at 10-10 thanks to a bucket from Lightner, the Rebels ended the first quarter with a 6-0 run that gave them the 16-10 advantage. Hargen ended up with eight points in the first quarter to lead the team. In the second quarter, the Titans got another great scoring run that allowed them to tie the ball game up again at 16-16 and kept the game competitive. Lightner played like a bolt of lightning with plenty of help from teammates Eli Wheelock, Clark, Gavin Batta, and Keegan Soard. Sioux Central had another scoring run as well, going 9-0 to get ahead 25-16 and finished the quarter with an 11-4 scoring run to extend their lead to 36-20. Carter Boettcher drained two three-pointers to get the long ranged attack going to the rebels and ended up with 12 first-half points.

The second half was all Sioux Central as they’d start to distance themselves from South Central Calhoun. They’d again get a 6-0 scoring run to start the second half to get ahead 42-20 and continued to shoot lights out from three-point range. Boettcher, Hargens, and Ethan Mills would account for 74 of the 80 points the Rebels scored as they were able to control the boards and found plenty of lanes to shoot the ball. South Central Calhoun never had a chance to tie the game up from that point on, the closest they got was being down by 19 points. After a battle in the first half, the rest of the game was clearly won by Sioux Central and they ended up with an 80-59 win and are Class 2A District 3 champions.

Lightner ends up leading the Titans with a 26-point performance followed by Eli Wheelock with 22 points. South Central Calhouns’ season comes to an end with a final record of 17-5. The Kuemper Knights will be taking on Sioux Central in the Class 2A Substate 2 Final on Saturday, February 25th at OABCIG High School. Jeff Blankman will have the broadcast on Kick 106.7 beginning around 6:45.
