Kuemper At Underwood- Class 2A Region 8

Underwood 64

Kuemper 43

Kuemper played well in the 1st half, but the height and length of Underwood took over in the 2nd half as the Eagles pulled away for the win. The Knights battled back from down 8 twice in the 1st half, pulling within 2 and 3 with Catherine Mayhall and Karsyn Overmohle providing the offense, as they combined for 19 at half. Early foul trouble inside affected the Knights ability to defend Alizabeth Jacobsen who was strong in the 1st half but dominated the 2nd half, getting nearly 20 of her 28 points right at the rim. Kuemper went cold in the 2nd half and were held to one shot per possession as Underwood won the rebound battle.

Catherine Mayhall scored the first points of the game and Kuemper led 2-0, but Underwood answered with 5 quick points and never trailed again. A three from Mayhall tied the game at 5 but Underwood went up 8-5 before Lauren Boell cut it to 8-7. Karsyn Overmohle, who had a nice 1st half on both ends of the floor, kept Kuemper close with a bucket. Underwood led 10-9 but went on a 6-0 run and led 19-11 at the end of the 1st quarter. Catherine Mayhall made it 19-13 early in the 2nd quarter but Underwood built a 23-15 lead before Karsyn Overmohle hit a three, making it 23-18. The Eagles kept the lead around 4-8 until the Knights closed within 2, at 28-26 on a bucket by Kaci Peter. The Eagles responded with a 5-0 run but Kuemper pulled within 3 at half on a pair of free throws from Catherine Mayhall.

Underwood opened the 2nd half on a 9-0 run, opening up a 12-point lead. Elsa Tiefenthaler scored the first points for Kuemper near the 3:22 mark in the 3rd. They trailed by 10 at that point and were down by 16 heading to the 4th quarter.

South Central Calhoun at Pocahontas Area – Class 2A Region 8 Semifinals

Pocahontas Area 50

South Central Calhoun 43

South Central Calhoun was unstoppable in the first half of the first quarter, but Pocahontas Area battled well with a strong defense to grab a playoff win over the Titans.

Both teams played each other earlier in the season when both teams were ranked, and the Indians got the better of the Titans then and looked to move on to the regional finals Friday night. The Titans looked like a brand-new team against the same team they struggled with earlier with a plethora of three-point buckets going their way early. Brenna McAlister got two three-pointers to swish into the net while Riley Batta and Kylee Schleisman both got three pointers to get the Titans up 12-0. Pocahontas Area struggled early from the floor, going 0-6 in their first six shots they took. The Indians were able to get more and more shots off and eventually got them to fall, cutting their 12-point deficit down to three points at 14-11 at the end of the first quarter.

The Indians were able to start the second quarter by tying up the ball game when Paige Melohn drained a three-pointer from the top of the key making it 14-14. Megan Sump gave the Indians their first lead of the ball game at 16-14 with a bucket on the run. After two more ties, the two teams were tied at 21-21 toward the end of the second quarter. The Titans gained some momentum back when Sophie McKinney drained a three-pointer with 1.2 second left to give South Central Calhoun the 24-21 lead at halftime.

In the second half, South Central Calhoun continued to face pressure from the Indians’ defense that forced the Titans to play faster than they wanted. The game was tied again at 26-26 in the third quarter, followed by the Titans re-grabbing the lead at 28-26. Pocahontas Area went on a bit of a scoring run after going up 29-28 with a Carly Janssen three-pointer. They’d go 10-5 to get ahead 39-33 before South Central Calhoun got the last bucket of the third quarter to make it 39-35 going into the fourth quarter. Brenna McAlister continued to be an asset on the court with another three-pointer added to her night. Olivia Toms was also impressive with some nice defensive pressure and two clutch shots.

In the fourth quarter, the battle at the charity stripe started with both teams nearing the double bonus. Schliesman started off going 2-2 before missing a crucial late free-throw. Aside from that, she helped keep the Titans in the game with a three-pointer to cut down the deficit to 39-38. The Indians continued to push the ball into the lane and got another bucket to get ahead 41-38 and later 43-40. Akaysa Duitscher won a big battle at the free throw line going 4-4 in the fourth quarter. After the Titans got down by seven points with 38 seconds left, the Indians got a few final defensive stops to eventually get out ahead 50-43 to advance to the regional final to take on Underwood.

Riley Batta, Kylee Schleisman, and Sophie McKinney close out their senior years with solid performances. McKinney had that big three point shot at the end of the first half to keep the Titans alive. Batta ended up with a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. And Schleisman ended up with 12 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and two steals. The Titans’ season comes to an end with a final record of 16-6.
