Carroll was aggressive on the board all game long but it was the defense that swung the game in the 2nd quarter as Carroll High knocks off Perry in the Quarterfinals in Class 4A Region 1. Carroll took an 8-point lead early, only to watch Perry rally back and tie the game three times in the 1st quarter and send the game to the 2nd quarter, tied at 16. Carroll picked up the defensive intensity and began to contain Lydia Olenjiczak. They started the 2nd quarter on a 15-0 run and didn’t allow a basket with Perry hitting three free throws in the quarter. The Tigers started knocking down shots from the outside in the 3rd getting, 3-3’s with Camryn Schalbe making two and Katelyn Aden knocking down one. Carroll limited their turnovers in the 1st half, giving them more chances on the offensive end. They pulled down 25 rebounds in the 1st half with 10 of those from girls who came in off the bench and nearly half of the rebounds on the offensive end. Carroll extended the lead in the 3rd quarter, getting up by 30 as they entered the 4th.
Shay Sinnard scored 11-points in the 1st half, scoring to open the game with a three. Shayne Aschinger and Katelyn Aden extended the lead to 7-2. Perry scored but Aden and Madison Tunning put Carroll up by 8 at 12-4. Perry responded with an 8-0 run but Carroll didn’t give up the lead. Shay Sinnard made it 14-12 and then put Carroll up 16-14. Perry tied the game at 16 after one quarter. Shay Sinnard scored to put Carroll up 18-16 to start the 2nd quarter, then Camryn Schable hit a three and a two, Sinnard scored again. Madison Tunning stretched the Carroll lead to 26-16 and Katelyn Aden added a buck to put Carroll up 29-16. Carroll had scored 15 in a row before Perry hit a free throw. Carroll led 38-19 at half Perry scored the first 3rd quarter but Carroll went on a 11-0 run to put the game out of reach.
Shay Sinnard paced Carroll with 17 points along with 4 rebounds. Katelyn Aden added 12 points, while pulling down 6 rebounds and dishing out 4 assists. Madison Tunning added 11 points and a good defensive effort while Camryn Schable had 8 points. Shayne Aschinger finished with 6 rebounds. Katelyn Aden was very good on defense against Lydia Olenjiczak.
Carroll improves to 11-11 overall and heads to Dallas Center Grimes on Saturday for Regional Semifinals on KIKD 106.7.
