Boys’ State Wrestling Tournament Day 1 Results
14 of our area boys’ wrestlers competed in the opening day of the boys’ state wrestling tournament at Des Moines’ Wells Fargo arena Wednesday. Despite some wrestlers receiving a first round bye, none of them were able to snag a win in the second round.
In Class 1A, the Kuemper Knights sent four wrestlers down with Riley Parkis receiving a bye in the first round. In his second-round match, he went up against Carson Suentjens of Kingsley Pierson where he lost via decision 9-7. Caleb Hoffman, Owen Nepple, and Will Healy all lost their opening round matches and will wrestle Friday in the second-round consolations. East Sac had two wrestlers at the tournament, and both went the distance but fell to the consolation bracket. Bradyn Burns lost to Lincoln Edwards of West Branch via decision 5-2 and Charlie Veit received a first round bye but fell to Trae Hagen of Wilton in the second round via decision 9-4. Coon Rapids Bayard and South Central Calhoun both sent down one wrestler each, being Raiden Doty and Brock Nattress respectively. Doty made it down to the tournament in his first year out for wrestling as a senior and will wrestle Friday in the second-round consolation as he was defeated via fall at 0:50 in the first round. Nattress went up against Danny Kinsella of Treynor in his first-round match but lost via decision 9-5.
In Class 2A, Carroll sent the largest number of wrestlers to the tournament in recent history with six qualifying for state. Three Tigers, Cael Nelson, Jireh Gallegos, and Colton Wieland, all received first round byes, but were unable to get past the second round. Nelson had a close match with Jerren Gille of Wahlert Dubuque but he ended up losing via decision 7-5. Gallegos was paired up with Logan Peyton of West Delaware, Manchester in the second round and he lost via decision 10-7. Wieland in the second round had Carter Heilskov of Hampton-Dumont-CAL and he lost via fall at 2:46. For the other three wrestlers for Carroll, they were able to pick up a win in the first round but lost in the second. Dreylen Schweitzer picked up a decision 11-6 win over Jake Haugse of Mount Vernon but lost via fall at 2:59 in the second round. Cooper Ludwig got past Ashton Moreno of Algona via a 7-0 decision but also lost via fall at 3:52 in the second round. Finally, Owen Klocke got a close 11-8 decision win over Triston Miller of Columbus/WMU in the first round but lost via tech fall in the second round. All six Carroll wrestlers will be back on the mats on Friday in the consolation bracket.
