Manson NW Webster at South Central Calhoun – Class 2A Region 8

South Central Calhoun 42

Manson NW Webster 32

South Central Calhoun faced off against a familiar opponent in Manson NW Webster Tuesday night in the Class 2A Region 8 Quarterfinal.
The Titans got the better of the Cougars in both of their regular season games, but this time both teams were fighting to keep their seasons alive. At the start, both teams struggled to keep their turnovers low and committed plenty of them. South Central Calhoun on the offensive end was unable to get many shots to go their way after the Cougars committed turnovers. The Titans eventually, behind a three-pointer from Sophie McKinney in the beginning parts of the quarter, were able to stay ahead by a score of 7-4. Manson NW Webster was able to get within two points at 9-7 at the start of the second quarter until Kylee Schliesman used her shiftiness to get inside the lane for a bucket to make it 11-7. Bre Patterson’s big night started off in the second quarter when she drained a three-pointer to give the Titans a 14-8 lead. Chloe Peterson for Manson NW Webster had some answers on the other end with two three-pointers that helped the Cougars keep the game close at halftime. South Central Calhoun held on to a four-point lead at 20-16.

Patterson’s long ball played a big part in the second half as the Titans as she drained another three-pointer to get the Titans ahead 23-18 and later 26-18 with another three-pointer. Both teams continued to struggle with turnovers late into the game, but South Central Calhoun, leading 28-21, put everything together in the fourth quarter. Defense is what led to the Titans coming away with the game late as the Cougars started to become frustrated. Schliesman had two back-to-back steals and Patterson again hit another three-point shot that started to solidify the win for South Central Calhoun. After the final buzzer went off, the Titans were victorious by a final score of 42-32.

As a team, the Titans committed 15 turnovers but had 12 steals and 10 assists against a tough Manson NW Webster team. Riley Batta ended up with a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, Schliesman led the team with nine assists and four steals, and Patterson led the team with 15 points. River Valley at Coon Rapids Bayard – Class 1A Region 4

Coon Rapids Bayard 45

River Valley 40

Coon Rapids Bayard ran into some trouble late against River Valley, but they survived and advanced to the next round of the Class 1A Region 4 playoffs.

The first half was no problem for the Crusaders who have been setting plenty of records this season. They’d easily get ahead 20-5 in the first half and keep their lead alive in the second quarter at 32-16. It all started with a 10-2 run in the first quarter that allowed Coon Rapids Bayard to keep their momentum up in the second quarter. Breeley and Malia Clayburg have been a great combo all season long and tonight they were that again when the Crusaders needed them most.

The second half for Coon Rapids Bayard was a complete 180. While River Valley was only able to put up seven points and was still down 38-23, the Crusaders didn’t help out their cause. Coon Rapids Bayard Head Coach Kaitlyn McAlister says they got in plenty of foul trouble in this game and that led to a tough situation late against the Wolverines. River Valley really came alive in the fourth quarter where they were down by 10 points at 45-35 and were within striking distance at 45-40. Coon Rapids Bayard was able to get enough stops late to end the late-game comeback from River Valley and survived 45-40.

Breeley had a big night with 16 points and nine rebounds while her sister, Malia, had 11 points and seven rebounds. Aubrey Hofbauer had a nice night as well with nine points and three steals while Anna Hart continues to be the heartbeat of the defense with a team-high six steals to go along with six points and three rebounds. The Crusaders move on to their regional semifinals on Friday, February 17th where they will travel to take on Exira-EHK.

Exira-EHK got the regular season sweep of the Rockets in the regular season and this game for Ar-We-Va was going to be another tough one.
