Woodbury Central at Ar-We-Va – Girls Class 1A Region 4

Ar-We-Va 49

Woodbury Central 39

Despite having their lead cut down to one point twice Thursday night, the Ar-We-Va Rocekts were able to survive against Woodbury Central and advance into the next round of the Class 1A Region 4 Playoffs.

Before their home playoff Thursday, the Rockets fell to Boyer Valley on Monday night who were unstoppable from long range, and the Rockets weren’t going to let Woodbury Central do the same. The Rockets got the game started with a 4-0 scoring run before the Wildcats came back with a bucket to cut down that lead to 4-2. Woodbury Central started off with a 2-3 zone defense and clogged up the lane, but couldn’t stop Maggie Ragaller. She ended up with eight first-quarter points to help lift the Rockets to an 18-14 lead. The Wildcats started the second quarter with a 3-0 run that led them to cut down the Rockets’ lead to one point at 20-19. The hopes of a lead change were stopped entirely when Delaney Schurke started to take long-range shots and drained a three-pointer from the top of the key to extend Ar-We-Va’s lead to 23-19. She drained two more three-pointers in a row to get the Rockets a spark that gave them a 31-24 lead at halftime.

Woodbury Central again wasn’t going down without a fight and would claw back and nearly take the lead. They started to implement a full-court press that took the Rockets by surprise and forced them to take risky passes down the court. The Wildcats cut down the lead again to one point at 33-32 with back-to-back made free throws from Emma Lambert. Jamie Hausman kept the Rockets ahead with a three-pointer on the other end making it 36-32. Lambert fouled again and made it a three-point contest at 36-33. Ragaller again found success inside a clogged lane for a bucket to keep the Rockets ahead 39-34 entering the fourth quarter. The Wildcats went radio silent in the final eight minutes after Madi Lloyd had a bucket and one made a free throw. Kora Obrecht was clutch in the paint with a field goal and two free throws while Schurke nailed another long-range three-pointer. The Rockets rode out the remainder of the game and survived with a 49-39 win.

Schurke and Ragaller both led the team with 15 points. Hausman added eight points while Obrecht had seven points. The Rockets advance in the Class 1A Region 4 playoffs and will travel to take on Exira-EHK on Tuesday, February 14th.
