The Kuemper Knights ran into some foul trouble late against Shenandoah Friday night, but they were able to get the job done in the end.
It’s been an up and down last few games for the Knights as they lost to #4 Bishop Heelan, defeated another top 15 team in #15 Harlan and won three straight before being trampled by #11 Lewis Central. Shenandoah gave the Knights a shock to the system in the first quarter as the Fillies got up 16-8. Kuemper responded with a shot of their own in the second quarter, freezing the Shenandoah offense and keeping them to just three points. The Knights would take the lead into halftime at 23-19. Cate Mayhall continues to play with her heart on her sleeve this season and she did so again in this game.
The Fillies tried to get back in the game at the start of the second half, but Kuemper was having none of it. The Knights continued to push the ball down court and score, adding 13 points to their lead at 36-25 going into the fourth quarter. In the last eight minutes, the Knights got into some foul trouble that led to some sloppy playing down the stretch. Shenandoah used that to get closer and closer to Kuemper’s lead. Despite outscoring them 17-14, Shenandoah was just a little bit off from taking over and fell 50-42 to Kuemper.
Mayhall ended up with 20 points in this game and was aided by Lauren Boell who added 10 points and eight rebounds. Frannie Glynn continues to be a force on the floor and had a team high four steals. The Knights are now 11-8 overall on the season and 6-4 in the Hawkeye Ten Conference.
The Knights conclude their regular season as they travel to take on Sioux City North on Monday, February 6th.

Despite both teams shooting the ball poorly from the floor, the Ar-We-Va Rockets were red hot from long range as they sank 10 three-pointers in their win over Paton Churdan Friday night.
From the start, both teams entered shooting around 27% from the floor and this game was no exception. Neither team could get past a cluttered defense underneath the basket, so Ar-We-Va went long range and drained four three pointers in the first quarter: two from Delaney Schurke and two from Maggie Ragaller. Becca Anderson would use Ar-We-Va’s defense against them and got two three-point plays and went 5-6 from the free throw line in the quarter. Ar-We-Va led 16-9 entering the second quarter. Both teams cooled off a fair bit and didn’t see many points added to their totals. Becca Anderson and Emma Stream both had a bucket and two made free throws in the second quarter while Kora Obrecht had four points and kept the Rockets ahead 26-19 at halftime.
In the third quarter, the three-pointers came raining down again from Ar-We-Va as they brought home five more, one from Obrecht, Jamie Hausman, and Schurke, and two from Maggie Ragaller. That got Ar-We-Va ahead of their season average for points as they led Paton Churdan 51-31 going into the fourth quarter. Becca Anderson had eight of Paton Churdan’s 12 points in the third quarter. Ar-We-Va was able to put on cruise control as they were ahead by 20 and ended up winning by 22 with a final score of 62-40.
Maggie Ragaller led Ar-We-Va in scoring with 20 points, followed by Delaney Schurke who had 11. Paton Churdan’s Becca Anderson led all players in this game with 21 points. Emma Stream ended the game with 15 points. Ar-We-Va is now 7-11 overall on the season and 6-9 in the Rolling Valley Conference while Paton Churdan falls to 2-18 overall and 0-14 in the conference.
Up next for both teams, Ar-We-Va concludes the regular season when they host Boyer Valley on Monday, February 6th and Paton Churdan gets Exira-EHK on the road on Monday to wrap up their regular season.

The South Central Calhoun Titans had another big battle in the Twin Lakes Conference as they got past a slow start to get past Manson NW Webster Friday night.
After falling to Newell Fonda, the Titans have gotten back to their winning ways, defeating SE Valley with a convincing 64-25 win. Manson NW Webster has been a team on the rise in the conference but have only won two games in the past five games. That didn’t matter much in the first quarter of Friday’s game where the Cougars took it to the Titans and ended up leading 18-12 after the first quarter. South Central Calhoun Head Coach Curt Batta says his team played a bit soft in the first quarter but called a time out and refocused well. After trailing by six points, the Titans turned the game around and led by two at 30-28 at halftime. It’s no surprise to Titans fans that Riley Batta and Kylee Schliesman both had stellar performances again, but they had to work all night long.
Manson NW Webster’s offense was shut down completely in the third quarter and only managed to have six points added to their total. Coach Batta says they kept Olvia Sturgis scoreless in the second half which helped them get back into the game and keep their lead alive at 43-34 going into the fourth quarter. Manson NW Webster had better results in the final eight minutes, but with four blocked shots from Batta and five steals from Schliesman, the Titans were able to ride the wave of momentum to a 58-45 win over the Cougars.
Batta ended up with 20 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and four blocks in this game. Schliesman led the team with 24 points while recording two rebounds, four assists, and five steals. Coach Batta gave credit to his bench and thought they contributed well on the floor. The Titans improved to 14-4 overall on the season and 8-3 in the Twin Lakes Conference. They’ll have a tough non-conference game coming up on Saturday, February 4th when they travel to take on #15 Spencer.

After being tied after the first quarter, the Coon Rapids Bayard Crusaders bounced back and never gave the lead up as they got past Boyer Valley on Friday night.
The Crusaders in their latest game against the Bulldogs Monday night were able to win it 60-47 and Boyer Valley was trying to avenge that loss. It looked like they were going to make that happen when Coon Rapids Bayard started off with a 5-2 lead and was matched at 7-7 before the end of the first quarter. Despite a 5-0 score run, the Bulldogs were shut down immediately in the second quarter and were kept to just three points. Breeley and Malia Clayburg led the offense to a 6-0 scoring run and eventually a 25-10 lead at halftime.
Along with the Clayburg’s doing what they have done all season long, Anna Hart had herself a great game and ended up with a team high 10 steals that controlled the Bulldogs. Coon Rapids Bayard got another long scoring run to start the second half, going 10-0 and leading 35-10. After another disappointing quarter from the Bulldogs, the Crusaders kept their lead alive at 44-20 with eight minutes left. Boyer Valley got themselves a nice scoring run in the fourth quarter, going 7-0, but still trailed by a sizable 44-27. Coon Rapids Bayard closed out the game and ended up with a 52-33 win.
Breeley and Malia Clayburg both ended up with 16 points, but Breeley had more steals with seven. Hart had a double-double with 10 points and 10 steals. The Crusaders improved to 13-7 overall on the season and 9-6 in the Rolling Valley Conference. Their busy week is over, and they focus their attention to their regular season finale as they host Glidden Ralston on Monday, February 6th.

Besides their slow first half, the Glidden Ralston Wildcats had CAM Anita in a tough situation all game long Friday night.
Glidden Ralston entering Friday’s game was back and forth with wins and losses, recently picking up a 42-36 win over Madrid. CAM Anita had kept their pace this season with a three-game winning streak entering this game. The Wildcats in the first quarter didn’t get off to a good start and CAM Anita took advantage of that and got up 8-0 quickly. The Wildcats started to get out of that deficit towards the end of the quarter and were down 17-11 going into the second quarter. They scored much better in the next quarter, only being outdone by one point by the Cougars at 22-21, but still found themselves down 39-32 at halftime. Paige Klocke continued to be a spark for the Wildcats, and she again had a stellar performance offensively. Even bench players like Ashtyn Klocke and Kassidy Wenck had started to become familiar and comfortable with the pace of varsity play.
In the second half, the Wildcats would again match the Cougars in points, but were unable to out play them. Both teams put up 10 points in the third quarter and CAM Anita went 14-13 in the final eight minutes, giving them the 63-55 win. Paige Klocke again led the team in scoring with 25 points. Tiela Janssen was next with 10 points and Ashtyn Klocke off the bench had nine points. The loss drops the Wildcats to 11-9 overall on the season and 9-6 in the Rolling Valley Conference. Their busy week concludes with another conference contest on Saturday, February 4th when they host West Harrison.

After clawing back from a difficult second quarter, the East Sac Raiders forced overtime, but fell a little bit shy of victory against Southeast Valley Friday night.
Both teams have struggled within the conference this season, so both were free to go out and show off their skills on the big stage. East Sac would start out leading this game after the first quarter 18-15. The Raiders ran into some trouble in the second half as they were kept to just nine points while Southeast Valley grabbed the lead and kept it at 31-27 at halftime. The climb back from that four-point deficit included four East Sac players who ended up with double-digit points and another two who had 10+ rebounds.
The Raiders started clawing back in the third quarter, out playing the Jaguars 17-15 and trailing by two at 46-44. The final effort to force overtime was successful as the Raiders were able to keep the slight edge with a 21-19 fourth quarter to tie the game up at 65-65 when the fourth quarter buzzer sounded. It was Mary Bontrager who got the ball on a drawn-up slide play where she was fouled with the Raiders down by one. Bontrager made one of two free throws that brought the game to overtime. Despite taking the full second half to erase a four-point deficit, Raiders were unable to finish the job as the Jaguars had a bit left in the tank. East Sac Raiders’ Coach Jason Phillips says down the stretch, his team didn’t shoot free throws very well. As a team, they went 15-26 from the charity stripe, shooting 57%. Mary Bontrager had the most on the team with nine made free throws out of 16. Southeast Valley escaped with a close 74-68 win in overtime.
Those four Raiders who had double-digit points were Mary Bontrager, who led the team with 17 points, Makenna Steiger who had 14, Sarah Bontrager off the bench who had 13, and Jen Aschinger who had 12 points. Addisen Ehler and Kendall Quirk aided in another way with rebounds, recording 13 and 12 rebounds respectively.
The Raiders will fall to 4-15 overall on the season and 2-9 in the Twin Lakes Conference. They are back in action on Saturday, February 4th for a make-up game from January 19th when they travel to take on MVAOCOU.

After a low scoring first half, and a close third quarter, the LoMa Panthers had enough gas in the tank to out play the IKM-Manning Wolves Friday night.
LoMa has been battling with Underwood for the top spot in the Western Iowa Conference, and IKM-Manning was close to knocking them off in the first half. The Wolves held the slight advantage in the first quarter, leading 9-6. LoMa came back, albeit with only six points, in the second quarter as they took the lead by a point at 12-11 entering halftime. Morgan Hanson had herself a great game as she’d get the double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Both teams’ offenses were able to finally get out of the low scoring slump and put up 16 points each, keeping LoMa ahead still by a point at 28-27. The fourth quarter is where the Panthers really got ahead of the Wolves. IKM-Manning had no answers late and were back to single digit points with just four to close out the game. After a 17-point fourth quarter performance, LoMa was able to escape being knocked off with a 45-31 win.
Along with Hanson, Mabel Langel had a solid game with eight points and three steals. The Wolves drop to 6-14 overall on the season and 6-8 in the Western Iowa Conference. They wrap up their regular season when they host Audubon on Tuesday, February 7th. Tyler Brunner will have the broadcast on 93.7 KKRL beginning around 5:45.
