#13 Lewis Central at Kuemper

Lewis Central 75

Kuemper 42

The Kuemper Knights had a tough time getting shots up against a tough #13 Lewis Central squad Friday night.

Both teams entered the game with winning streaks on the line, with Kuemper winners of three straight including a road win over #15 Harlan and Lewis Central were winners of six in a row. The first quarter showed why Lewis Central is second in the conference as they got out quickly with a 21-10 lead over Kuemper. The Titans came out in a full court press and weren’t afraid to tie up the Knights any chance they got. Kuemper had a better second quarter performance with Elsa Tiefenthaler getting some offense generated. Frannie Glynn appeared to bring the aggressiveness underneath the basket, but that still wasn’t enough to get Kuemper ahead in this game. They trailed Lewis Central 35-23 at halftime.

The Titans came back from the break with the same trap defense mentality that worked to their advantage again. They were able to rely on Lucy Scott’s ability to shoot the three-pointer as she came away with five three pointers and 28 points and Brooke Larsen to get to the basket for layups. Catherine Mayhall tried to get the team back on track, but their attempts were thwarted. Lewis Central led 54-28 heading into the fourth quarter. The Titans backed off their full court press, but still had their productive offense to bring them to a 75-43 win.

Mayhall and Tifenthaler both ended up leading the team in scoring with 10 and 11 points respectively while Glynn led the team with 11 rebounds. The Knights are now 10-8 overall on the season and 5-4 in the Hawkeye 10. They are back on their home court on Tuesday, January 31st as they host Harlan.

East Sac at Sioux Central

Sioux Central 71

East Sac 42

The East Sac Raiders had their hands full Friday night as they took on one of the top teams in the Twin Lakes Conference, Sioux Central.

Sioux Central coming into this game had won five straight, including wins against two top 15 teams in Pocahontas Area and South Central Calhoun while East Sac won two of their last five games against Woodbury Central and Alta-Aurelia. Both teams seemed to be evenly matched in the first quarter as Sioux Central was ahead by one point at 17-16. That small lead then exploded into 14 when the Rebels got their offense going in the second quarter. East Sac had little answers from their offense as they had eight points and tried 38-24 at halftime. Mary Bontrager normally leads the Raiders in scoring, but this time around it was Makenna Steiger who led the offense.

The Rebels weren’t done putting up 20+ points as they exceeded their second quarter performance with a 22-point display in the third quarter. East Sac again saw some troubles on their offensive end with only 10 points added to their score as they trailed 60-34 going into the fourth quarter. Sioux Central bided their time as they were able to run out the clock and come away with the 71-42 win over East Sac.

Steiger in this game led the Raiders with 19 points. Bontrager still had a nice game with seven points, three rebounds, and two steals. Kendall Quirk and Addisen Ehler led the team with seven rebounds. The loss drops the Raiders to 4-13 overall on the season and 2-7 in the Twin Lakes Conference. Their scheduled game for Saturday, January 28th against GTRA has been canceled, their next game will be on Tuesday, January 31st when they host Pocahontas Area.

South Central Calhoun at #2 Newell Fonda

Newell Fonda 70

South Central Calhoun 43

After a lengthy winning streak for the South Central Calhoun Titans, they are now 3-2 in their last five games as they took on a juggernaut of girls’ basketball in Newell Fonda on Friday night.

After falling to #1 Estherville Lincoln Central, the Mustangs have won their past four games while South Central Calhoun picked up back to back wins over West Bend Mallard and Emmetsburg. Against Newell Fonda the Titans struggled to match the intensity of a well coached team as the Mustangs were able to get up 21-6. They’d keep their pace up in the second quarter and put up another 22 points to lead it 43-16 at halftime. Titans’ Head Coach Curt Batta says despite this game being lopsided, this was a great learning opportunity against one of the best teams in the conference.

The Titans were able to go back-to-back quarters with double-digit points in the second half. Riley Batta and Kylee Schleisman both had double-digit points for the Titans with Batta leading the team with 16 points and nine rebounds. After their large first half, the Mustangs cruised in the second half to win it 70-43.

The Titans are now 12-4 overall on the season and 6-3 in the Twin Lakes Conference. Their Saturday, January 29th game against Denison Schleswig has been canceled. Up next for the Titans will be their game on Tuesday, January 31st when they travel to take on Southeast Valley.

Ar-We-Va at Coon Rapids Bayard

Coon Rapids Bayard 46

Ar-We-Va 31

The Coon Rapids Bayard Crusaders grabbed the season sweep of Ar-We-Va as they took on the Rockets Friday night.

Coon Rapids Bayard had won four of their last five games including a big win against #6 Woodbine while Ar-We-Va had only won one of their last five games, that being against Paton-Churdan. The Rockets kept the game interesting early with the 5-4 lead, but the Crusaders came back and took the lead at 8-5 and never gave it up. Breeley Clayburg and Malia Clayburg again were crucial to the game plan for Coon Rapids Bayard as both put up great stat lines. Maggie Ragaller for Ar-We-Va continued to lead the Rockets on the offensive end, but the defense for the Rockets couldn’t stop the Crusaders for a large part of the game. In the second quarter the Crusaders kept their game plan in tact and stayed ahead by a score of 30-16.

In the second half, the Rockets were able to cut down the Crusader lead down to 11 points at 39-28. Coon Rapids Bayard would stay ahead 41-30 going into the fourth quarter. There was a lack of scoring by both teams in the final eight minutes as a combined six points was scored. After the lackluster ending, the Crusaders came out victorious by a final score of 46-31.

Breeley Clayburg led the team in scoring with 22 points while Malia Clayburg had herself a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Anna Hart had a nice game as well with eight points and a team high seven steals. Maggie Ragaller for Ar-We-Va led the team with 15 points and Kora Obrecht had a team high nine rebounds. Ar-We-Va’s game against Storm Lake St. Mary’s for Saturday, January 28th has been canceled; they will take on West Harrison on Tuesday, January 31st on the road. Audubon at Underwood

Underwood 40

Audubon 32

The Audubon Wheelers took advantage of a slow start from #7 Underwood as they had one of their strongest performances of the season Friday night.

The Wheelers recently broke a long losing streak by picking up a win over Riverside while Underwood recently lost to #14 Glenwood. Those woes for the Eagles continued in this game as Audubon was able to get out ahead by a score of 10-7. That lead was held up in the second quarter as Underwood was only able to manage to put up nine points while Audubon took a 21-15 lead into halftime. Madison Steckler was the leader for the Wheelers in this game as she ended up with 12 points.

In the second half, Underwood had one big quarter that made all the difference. The Eagles had 17 points in the third quarter and kept Audubon to just six as they’d take the lead at 32-27. Audubon kept the game close until the end and were able to keep Underwood to just seven points in the fourth quarter, but the late game push wasn’t meant to be as Underwood came away with the close 40-32 win.

Audubon will be back in action on Tuesday, January 31st when they host LoMa.
