Coon Rapids Bayard at Ogden

Coon Rapids Bayard 42

Ogden 27

Despite a rough scoring performance at times for the Coon Rapids Bayard Crusaders, they were able to keep Ogden at bay and pick up the win Monday night.

The Crusaders and Bulldogs both got off to slow starts in the first quarter where Coon Rapids Bayard held on to a 6-5 lead. The second quarter was much better for the Crusaders, putting up 15 points and keeping Ogden to five to lead 21-10. Coon Rapids Bayard Head Coach Kaitlyn McAlister says they missed too many layups in this game, missing between 10-15 in this game. But they had plenty of help at the free throw line with Malia Clayburg going nine for 13 from the charity stripe.

In the second half, Ogden started off by gaining back some ground they lost and cutting down their 11-point deficit down to eight at 30-22. Along with big offensive performances from Malia Clayburg and Breeley Clayburg, it was Anna Hart who shined on the defensive end when they grabbed 10 steals. That helped the Crusaders cruise toward the end of the game with a 12-5 fourth quarter to win it 42-27.

Malia Clayburg got herself a double-double with 25 points and 11 rebounds, Breeley Clayburg had 10 points and nine rebounds, and Lydia Hofbauer had five assists and four steals. This win elevates the Crusaders to 9-5 overall on the season and are now on a four-game winning streak. Coon Rapids Bayard has a big conference challenge on Tuesday, January 24th when they host Exira-EHK.

South Central Calhoun at Emmetsburg

South Central Calhoun 39

Emmetsburg 32

The 14th ranked South Central Calhoun Titans were able to squeak out a win Monday night as they took on Twin Lakes Conference foe Emmetsburg.

Both teams were on losing streaks and looking to snap them, with the Titans losing to Sioux Central and Pocahontas Area and Emmetsburg falling to the same two opponents in addition to Manson-NW Webster. The Titans in the first quarter were able to use a good enough start to stay ahead 10-8. The E-Hawks hit a slump in the second quarter as the Titans had enough offense to keep them ahead 18-12. Kylee Schleisman continues her great senior campaign with another big performance along with Riley Batta getting a big stat line.

In the second half, the E-Hawks bounced back fairly quickly at the start of the third quarter, only being outscored by one point at 10-9. The Titans kept their lead up and added to it at 28-21. The final eight minutes of the contest both teams were able to match each other with 11 points, allowing South Central Calhoun to escape a late game disaster and came away with the 39-32 win. South Central Calhoun Coach Curt Batta gave credit to the E-Hawks, who he says is historically strong defensively, but they found ways to scrap together the win.

Schleisman ended up with a team leading 17 points along with four rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Batta was a defensive force with five steals, three blocks, eight rebounds, and added 11 points to her stat line.
