North Polk at Carroll

North Polk 58

Carroll 56

Carroll played three outstanding quarters and trailed for less than four minutes in this game, losing a heartbreaker on Tuesday at home. The Tigers were really good on defense for three quarters, executed on offense for 3 quarters and hit free throws for 3 quarters. They led 9th ranked North Polk 45-34 after Trey Hunter hit a three, sending the game to the 4th quarter. North Polk shot a lot of threes in the game, but weren’t hitting many of them, until the 4th quarter. They scored the first eight points of the 4th, taking their first lead at 50-47 with under four minutes remaining. Carroll nabbed the lead back but turnovers and missed free throws added up for Carroll in the 4th quarter and North Polk went up 5 and held on to win 58-56.

Carroll went up 9-0 to start the game as Jack White scored inside, Tanner Gotto picked up a quick bucket, Evan Hammer scored back-to-back baskets with a free throw added. North Polk scored their first points of the game with 4:15 left in the 1st quarter. They pulled within 4 late in the 1st quarter but Evan Hammer scored again, and Jack White extended the Tiger lead to 8. Carroll led 17-11 heading into the 2nd quarter. North Polk hit a three to start the 2nd but Carroll got free throws from Tanner Gotto and a bucket from Jack White to lead 21-14. Bryce Berlau hit the first of his three-threes in the game, putting Carroll up 24-16. The lead hovered around five to seven points until late in the half. Jack White scored inside to put Carroll up 30-22. Berlau hit another three and Carroll was up 33-22. North Polk knocked in a three, but Trey Hunter scored to put Carroll up 35-25 at half.

Tanner Gotto extended the Carroll lead to thirteen early in the 3rd with a three. Jack White added a basket to keep the lead at 41-28 midway through the 3rd as both teams struggled to score in the 3rd quarter. North Polk pulled within eight late but again it was Trey Hunter scoring to extend the Carroll lead to 45-34, heading to the 4th quarter. The Comets scored the first eight points of the 4th quarter as they began to heat up from outside. They trailed 45-42 when Trey Hunter extended the Carroll lead to 47-42. A Comet three pulled them within 3 and then Jaxon Rutledge hit a pair of free throws, tying the game at 47 with 4:01 left. Rutledge hit a three shortly after and North Polk took their first lead of the game. Jack White pulled Carroll within 1 at 50-49 but North Polk went back up 3. Bryce Berlau tied the game with his third three, then Jack White hit a free throw, putting Carroll up 53-52. North Polk responded with back-to-back threes to lead 58-53. Carroll had a couple of chances late. Going to the free throw line for a pair of free throws, then a North Polk technical put the Tigers at the line for two free throws with a chance to pull within one possession. Carroll went 1-4 from the line during that stretch (going 4-9 in the 2nd half), pulling within 4. North Polk turned the ball over with 4 seconds remaining and Carroll scored on a lob, but the Tigers were out of timeouts and North Polk didn’t have to inbound the ball.

Trey Hunter led the Tigers with 13 points to go with 4 assists. Jack White added 23 points, Evan Hammer had 10 points and 7 rebounds, Bryce Berlau had 10 points and Tanner Gotto added 9 points and 7 rebounds.

The loss drops Carroll to 6-6 overall and 4-6 in the Raccoon River Conference. They take on Roland Story on Saturday at the Gilbert Tournament.

The Titans continue to climb up the ladder of the Twin Lakes Conference, winning seven games in a row and being undefeated in the conference at 4-0. A young Pocahontas Area team does not have any seniors and are still battling against these tough opponents. The Titans had a big surge of momentum in the first quarter as they got plenty of points in transition. They were able to cruise to a 30-15 lead at the end of the first quarter. They’d continue to give guys opportunities to score and added 23 points to their lead and were up 53-25 at halftime. Tyler Lightner was stealing balls left and right and every time he was able to get points in transition. He ended the game with six steals and 14 points.

The second half the Titans started to slow down just a little bit, but still added another 22 points to their total. Four players ended the game with double-digit points, including Gavin Batta, Lightner, and Eli Wheelock, who had 14 points each, and Cole Higgins who hit three three-pointers and had 11 points. East Sac at West Bend Mallard

West Bend Mallard 56

East Sac 48

The East Sac Raiders saw their first half lead disappear as West Bend Mallard went on a tear in the second half Tuesday night.

Both teams went 1-4 in their last five games with East Sac defeating Storm Lake St. Mary’s and West Bend Mallard getting past Paton Churdan. The Raiders got off to a solid enough start and were just outdone by one point at 12-11 heading into the second quarter. East Sac had their biggest scoring performance in that next quarter as they were able to put up 20 points and keep West Bend Mallard to 11 points, leading 31-23 at halftime. East Sac Head Coach Todd Bontrager says he was happy with the rebounding efforts in the first half and thought Carter Hogrefe played well off the bench with four points in this game.

The second half is where the entire game took a 180 and the Wolverines started to come back. Coach Bontrager says they were outplayed by the hustle and aggressiveness of West Bend Mallard and did a poor job of moving the basketball. The Wolverines were able to claw back and lead by a point at 40-39. The chance to get back in the game started to slip for East Sac in the fourth quarter with West Bend Mallard continuing to score well. Coach Bontrager added his team didn’t defend with enough energy down the stretch to stop the Wolverine’s offense. After a big 33-point second half, West Bend Mallard caught up and came away with the 56-48 win.

The Raiders ended up shooting 41% from the field and 35% from long range, with Karter Ludwig draining three three-pointers and recording 15 points to lead the team. Luke Wright added 13 points and led the team with eight rebounds. The loss drops the Raiders to 3-8 overall on the season and 1-5 in the Twin Lakes Conference. They are back in action on Thursday, January 19th when they travel to take on MVAOCOU.

Exira-EHK at Ar-We-Va

Exira-EHK 57

Ar-We-Va 48

The Ar-We-Va Rockets were at one point down by 34 points in the third quarter and managed to almost pull off the comeback of the year as they took on Exira-EHK Tuesday night.

Ar-We-Va has seen some recent success with wins over Glidden Ralston and Boyer Valley while Exira-EHK has only dropped one game this season, against West Harrison back on January 10th. The Spartans were untouchable in the first quarter as they got out to a massive 26-2 lead after the first quarter ended. The Rockets calmed them down with a better second quarter effort and putting up 10 points themselves. The stage was set as the Spartans led 40-12 at halftime. Despite the slow start, Ar-We-Va had three players with double-digit points, including Kyelar Cleveland who ended up with a double-double.

The Rockets comeback started in the third quarter when they were down by 34 points with five minutes left in the third quarter. From that point on, Ar-We-Va went to work to cut down that Spartan lead. After a 16-10 third quarter, they were down 50-28, and then the fourth quarter came. The Rockets became a bucket making machine and were able to put up 20 points and cut down a massive 34-point deficit down to just six points with 2:30 left to play. Cleveland was a big part of that push, putting up 17 points and 14 rebounds while Wyatt Ragaller aided on the defensive end with six steals. Despite the massive wave of momentum and 20-point performance late, the Rockets fell just a bit short of victory at 57-48.

The Rockets will fall to 3-8 overall on the season and 2-6 in the Rolling Valley Conference. They will be back on the court this Saturday, January 21st when they host River Valley.

Coon Rapids Bayard at West Harrison

West Harrison 64

Coon Rapids Bayard 22

The Coon Rapids Bayard Crusaders had a gooseache of a loss Tuesday night as they took on conference leader West Harrison.

Last time these two teams played, West Harrison had another big win, defeating the Crusaders 66-33, and the Crusaders were looking for some revenge. Those plans were put on hold as the Hawkeyes came out in the first half with no intentions of allowing Coon Rapids Bayard to score. The Crusaders were held to just six points in the half while West Harrison went on to lead 42-6 at the halftime. The two deadliest players for the Crusaders, Lance Clayburg and Cal Heydon, were nullified early and only had two points each in this game.

The Hawkeyes continued to add on the points with 12 more in the third quarter and capped it all off with 10 in the fourth quarter. The Crusaders were defeated 64-22. Cade Behrens led the Crusaders with eight points and six rebounds. Heydon also had six rebounds.

The loss drops the Crusaders to 6-5 overall on the season and 4-4 in the Rolling Valley Conference. They are off until Friday, January 20th when they travel for another tough conference battle against Woodbine.

CAM Anita at Paton Churdan

CAM Anita 46

Paton Churdan 27

Phoenix Hartman and the Paton Churdan Rockets didn’t give up until the end as they hosted CAM Anita Tuesday night.

The Cougars got out quickly against the Rockets and were able to hold the 14-7 advantage heading into the second quarter. Hartman has been a big spark on the court with his speediness and ability to score. CAM Anita continued to be consistent against the Rockets defense in the second quarter, but the Rockets were able to keep the Cougars below their season average of 51 points. The Cougars increased their lead to 26-11 at halftime.

Paton Churdan found ways to improve in the second half and started off by only being outscored by three points. Hartman and Cayden Stream were a big part of that push as they were able to score 15 and 10 points respectively in this game. The Rockets still had a hole to dig out of down 40-22 with eight minutes of regulation remaining. The last quarter was a bit lackluster with both teams putting up a combined 11 points, allowing CAM Anita to come away with the 46-27 win.

The Rockets conclude their week of games with a road game against conference leader West Harrison on Friday, January 20th.

Audubon at Treynor

Treynor 82

Audubon 47

The Audubon Wheelers hung on well in the first half against Treynor, but the Cardinals ultimately had the last laugh.

Both teams came into this one with a wonky last five games, Audubon went 2-3 with wins over Missouri Valley and Ar-We-Va and Treynor went 3-2 with wins over Missouri Valley, Underwood, and Riverside. In the first half, the Cardinals were deadly and were able to put up 23 points. Audubon wasn’t too far behind, but only had 16 points in the first quarter. Edward Miller and Collin Bauer continue to be a two-headed nightmare for defenses, and both ended up with double digit points in this game. In the second quarter, Treynor still maintained their potency with 19 points added to their lead while Audubon stayed consistent with 16 points, trailing 42-32 at halftime.

The Cardinals came out of the break with more consistency from their offense and added another 24 points in the third quarter, a game high. Audubon’s efficiency declined to only 15 points total in the second half. The Cardinals used that drop in efficiency to get ahead for good and come away with the 82-47 win.

The loss drops the Wheelers to 4-10 overall on the season and 3-8 in the Western Iowa Conference. The Wheelers are in action next on Friday, January 20th when they travel to take on AHSTW.

IKM-Manning at AHSTW

AHSTW 62

IKM-Manning 49

The IKM-Manning Wolves battled until the very end against AHSTW, but the Vikings got too far ahead of the Wolves to come back and win it.

IKM-Manning had a two-game winning streak coming into this game, defeating Riverside and LoMa while ninth ranked AHSTW was 4-1 in their last five games, only losing to Underwood by one point. In the first quarter the Wolves were able to hold their own and lead 10-7. AHSTW got back in the game and tied it up at 12 points and were able to stay slightly ahead by a score of 18-14 heading into the second quarter. The Vikings used that slight wave of momentum into the next quarter where they kept IKM-Manning at arm’s length. Ben Ramsey was one of the leaders for the Wolves in this game and was able to keep his team within striking distance. The Vikings were able to hold on to their lead after a back and forth second quarter at 33-24.

AHSTW in the third quarter got their largest lead of the game thanks to a 11-0 scoring run to get them ahead 49-28. IKM-Manning drained a few buckets to cut down the lead to 49-32, but that would end up being the closest they would get to cutting the lead down further. They’d only manage to get up eight points in the third quarter but had some hope in the fourth with 17 points. Despite the late game efforts, the Vikings would come out on top by a score of 82-47.

Some stats for the Wolves include Ramsey who had 14 points and four rebounds, Caden Keller who scored six points along with 10 boards, and Reed Hinners who had a balanced game with seven points and six rebounds. The loss drops the Wolves to 8-5 overall on the season and 6-4 in the Western Iowa Conference.
