Carroll at Gilbert

Carroll 44

Gilbert 43

The Carroll Tigers, after being up by two heading into halftime, found themselves in an entertaining battle against Gilbert Friday night where the ending was just as exciting.

Gilbert came into this game with a tough stretch of games, winning only two of their last five, while Carroll had won three of their last five, defeating ADM, Boone, and Bondurant Farrar. Carroll’s streak against Gilbert wasn’t the best, only winning one of the last five matchups, that being back on December 3rd of 2021. That didn’t affect how Carroll played in this game as they started out by giving Gilbert a run for their money, only down two points at 11-9. Just before the first quarter buzzer went off, Shayne Aschinger was able to hit an elbow jumper to get Carroll to that two-point deficit. Madison Tunning led Carroll at that point with four points. Before halftime came around, Gilbert had a rough second quarter and allowed Carroll to get ahead by two points at 19-17 with only six points in the quarter. Tunning continued to play well as she led the team with seven points at halftime.

Gilbert gained some back some lost ground in the third quarter by tying up the game at 31 points. Schable was once again on point for Carroll hitting back-to-back three pointers to give them the five-point lead in the middle of the quarter. That gave Schable 11 points in the game at that point. In the fourth quarter, it was just as close as the entire game had been up until that point. The lead hadn’t been more than five all game long and with the game on the line, it was going to come down to clutch shots. Shay Sinnard hit that clutch shot for Carroll with six seconds left in the game to give the Carroll Tigers the 44-43 lead and the defense did the rest of the work until the buzzer sounded, giving them the win.

Schable ended up leading Carroll with 15 points on the night. Katelyn Aden was a support system for Carroll with seven rebounds and five steals, both leading the team. The Tigers are now 6-6 overall on the season and 4-4 in the Raccoon River Conference. They are off until Tuesday, January 17th when they host North Polk.

South Central Calhoun at Alta Aurelia

#12 South Central Calhoun 70

       Alta Aurelia 57

South Central Calhoun, who enters this week’s IGHSAU rankings at #12 in Class 2A, showed why they belong as one of the top teams as they cruised past Alta Aurelia Friday night.

The Titans are on a roll this season, winning nine of their last 10 games and even getting past a ranked South Hamilton team on January 7th. Alta Aurelia was on a three-game winning streak before Storm Lake played spoiler to them on Thursday night. South Central Calhoun showed early on against the Warriors why they are 12-0 against them by draining shot after shot and getting up 23-17 in the first quarter. Titans Head Coach Curt Batta said his team struggled on the defensive end to stop the Warriors’ motion offense but completed that with a great offense of their own. In the second quarter, South Central Calhoun kept the offensive pressure on with 21 points and held the 14-point lead at 44-30 at halftime. The Titans in this game were led by the dynamic duo of Riley Batta and Kylee Schliesman once again where Batta had one of her most productive nights of the season, putting up 39 points with Schliesman getting 10 assists.

In the second half, the Titans were just trying to stay ahead of the Warriors and not allow them to gain much ground back. Coach Batta says they made some adjustments entering the second half and did a much better job containing the Warriors offense. While only winning the third quarter by three points, the Titans stayed ahead of Alta-Aurelia 63-46. The final eight minutes were just a waiting game for South Central Calhoun as they came away with their 10th victory of the season at 70-57.
