Boys Basketball Results for Tuesday, January 3rd

Denison Schleswig at Kuemper

Kuemper 52

Denison Schleswig 48

The Kuemper Knights had to climb a mountain Tuesday night against Denison Schleswig as they were able to edge by the Monarchs for the season sweep.

The Knights had some early game stumbling blocks as they came out of the holiday break atop the Hawkeye 10 conference with a 3-0 record as the Monarchs have only dropped one game at 4-1 in the conference. Some ball handling is where the Knights struggled as the Monarchs got out to a 6-0 run to start and led 13-4 heading into the second quarter. Kuemper got back on track in the second half and started to cut down the Monarch’s lead. While not one player stood out for the Knights, they played as a unit and played especially well underneath the basket. Dawson Gifford led the Knights with four points and the Knights cut down Denison Schleswig’s lead to 25-17 by halftime.

In the second half the Knights were able to really get ahead of the Monarchs. While down by 10 points at one point in the first half, Kuemper rebounded with a solid performance and grabbed their first lead of the night at 29-27. The Monarchs got their lead back and held on to a four-point 36-32 lead heading into the third quarter. Gifford continued to be a great asset with a three-pointer made and plenty of rebounds in the paint. Evan Adams was another one of those offensive tools as he came away with 11 rebounds in total in the game. In the fourth quarter the Knights kept the pressure on with Gifford nailing two three pointers at the start of the quarter. Michael Kasperbauer popped off in the fourth quarter with seven points and helped aid the Knights to another lead change, this time for good. With 21 points in the final eight minutes, Kuemper came away with the season sweep over Denison Schleswig with a final score of 52-48.

Gifford led the team this game with 13 points while Adams had 11 rebounds to lead the team. The Knights stay undefeated in the Hawkeye 10 conference at 4-0 and 8-1 overall on the season. The Knights will look to stay undefeated as they host Atlantic on Friday.
