Carroll made just enough plays down the stretch to pull out a tight win over Winterset in a game that changed leads 18 times and was tied 9 times. Both teams had runs but the Carroll defense and rebounding late turned out to be the difference. Carroll forced a couple turnovers on the Huskies final couple of possessions and hit 2 of 5 from the free throw line. A big key down the stretch was their ability to get offensive rebounds on several missed free throw attempts. Jack White made a nice strip of the ball with Carroll up 65-62 with under 20 seconds remaining and Carroll came up with the loose ball. Winterset was trying to get Brayden Dinkla open for a three and he tried to draw a foul but White stripped him of the ball on the way up. Payton Wardell came up with the ball and hit a free throw to push the lead to 4 points. The Tigers withstood a 14-0 run by Winterset in the 2nd quarter after Carroll had gone up by 9. The Tigers led 16-13 after the 1st quarter, but the game was tied at 32 at half, Sam Hensley tipped in a shot at the buzzer to end the 3rd and Winterset led 50-48. Carroll scored 16-points in each of the first-three quarters, then had their best scoring quarter with 18 in the 4th. Their defense held Winterset to 12 in the final stanza. 

Tanner Gotto hit a free throw to put Carroll up 1-0. Winterset responded with 7 of the next 9 to lead 7-3. Evan Hammer put Carroll up  9-7 but Winterset responded with a bucket and led 10-9. Jack White scored inside and Carroll led 11-10. Winterset again scored and led 12-11 as the 1st quarter had 6 lead changes and 2 ties. A Jack White bucket gave Carroll a 16-13 heading into the 2nd quarter. Evan Hammer scored, followed by a Tanner Gotto bucket and a layup off the fast-break by Markus Wagner and Carrlll led 22-13. Winterset scored the next 14-points to go up 27-22. Evan Hammer hit a pair of free throws to break the streak and Carroll fought back, getting a bucket from Hammer, a pair of free throws from Trey Hunter and a bucket by Jack White to pull ahead 30-29. Tanner Gotto scored to make it 32-29 but Winterset knotted it a 32 at half. 

The Huskies took the lead to start the 3rd quarter, going up 37-34. Evan Hammer cut it to 37-36 but Winterset kept the Tigers at bay. The lead grew to 44-38 but Tanner Gotto had back-to-back baskets, making it 44-40.  Jack White cut it to 44-42 and Bryce Berlau put Carroll up 45-44. Winterset went back up 46-45. Jack White knocked down a pair of free throws and Carroll led 51-50 early in the 4th quarter. Winterset again responded to lead 53-52, extending it to 55-52. Tanner Gotto drained a free throw to pull Carroll within 2, then Evan Hammer tied the game at 55. The lead went back and forth with Carroll going up 59-57. Winterset took their last lead at 60-59, then went up 61-59 but Evan Hammer scored to tie the game at 61. Tanner Gotto put Carroll up for good with a bucket at 63-61. Bryce Berlau made 1 of 2 free throws twice, making it 65-62, then Payton Wardell iced it with a free throw. 

Evan Hammer was huge for Carroll with 19 points, 15 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals. Tanner Gotto came up clutch with 19 points with 6 rebounds. Jack White added 12 points and Bryce Berlau finished with 8 points. 

The Tigers improved to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the Raccoon River Conference. They head to Ballard on Friday.

Kuemper’s defense in the 2nd quarter turned out to be the difference as the Knights picked up a  nice road win.  They outscored Atlantic 19-7 in the 2nd quarter, building a 35-23 lead at half. The Knights outscored the Trojans by just 3 points in the other three quarters combined. Kuemper shot 42.4% from the field and hit 51.4% from inside the arc, knocking down 18 of 35 shots. They went 7 of 24 from beyond the arc. Kuemper did a nice job taking care of the ball, turning it over just 8 times while finishing with 11 steals. 

Dawson Gifford led three players in double figures with 20 points, DJ Vonnahme added 12 points along with 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Michael Kasperbauer was also in double figures with 10 points. DJ Vonnahme and Dawson Gifford each had 3 steals. 

The win improves Kuemper to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the Hawkeye 10 Conference. The Knights have won 4 straight heading into Friday’s home game with Kingsley Pierson.

Collin Bauer hit a game winner for the Wheelers as they rallied from down 46-36 entering the 4th quarter. The Wheelers outscored Riverside 21-10 in the 4th quarter. They held Riverside to 39.2% from the field. 

No other details were reported for the game. 

The Wheelers picked up their first win of the season and first win for first year Head Coach Jacob Privia. They improved to 1-5 overall and 1-4 in the Western Iowa Conference. They host Boyer Valley on Thursday.

Coon Rapids Bayard has been battling illness at school and their low numbers of available kids didn’t  help as they matched up against one of the top teams in the league on the road. The Crusaders played well in the 1st quarter, finding themselves down by 8 heading into the 2nd quarter. The game began to slip away with the Spartans building a 43-26 lead at half. Coon Rapids Bayard struggled out of the break, scoring just 6 points in the 3rd and 2 points in the 4th quarter. The dropped their second straight game to fall to 3-2 on the season and 1-2 in the Rolling Valley Conference with both losses against teams combined 10-1 overall and 7-0 in the league. 

Cal Heydon led the Crusaders with 12 points and 5 rebounds. Lance Clayburg added 8 points and 8 rebounds and Cade Behrens finished with 7 rebounds while Parker Hays pulled down 5 rebounds. 

The Crusaders head to Ar-We-Va on Friday.

The Rockets played well most of the game, trailing by 2 with four minutes left. The Tigers pulled away down the stretch to win by 14. The loss drops Ar-We-Va to 0-3 on the season and 0-3 in the Rolling Valley Conference. 

Harley Molina led the Rockets with 15 points along with 4 assists. Emmett Neumann added 11 points and 6 rebounds. Blayne Smith pulled down 6 rebounds and Wyatt Ragaller had a team high 3 steals. 

Ar-We-va heads to Westwood on Thursday.
