Boys Basketball Results for Tuesday, December 6th

Carroll at North Polk

North Polk 57

Carroll 40

The Carroll Tigers were on the road Tuesday when they took on North Polk and saw some troubles shooting the ball in two of their four quarters.

The Tigers were 2-0 entering this game, defeating Kuemper in a high scoring game and Gilbert in a much closer game. North Polk was undefeated as well, defeating Pella and Carlisle before this game. The Comets got the first quarter started with an 11-0 run that led to their 15-5 lead heading into the second quarter. Carroll’s snafu in the first quarter was eventually countered with a better second quarter. The Tigers outscored the Comets 11-7 in the quarter but still trailed 22-16 at halftime. Even Hammer led the Tigers with 9 points in the half.

In the third quarter it was all North Polk as the Comets left Carroll in the dust with a 20-7 point spread in the third quarter and extending their lead to 42-23. The Tigers did have two solid scorers on the floor, being Hammer and Tanner Gotto who both ended up with 11 points in the game. In the final quarter of the game, the Comets were outscored by two points by the Tigers, but their massive first and third quarters led to their eventual 17-point 57-40 win at home.

The Tigers will fall to 2-1 overall on the season and 1-1 in the Raccoon River Conference. They go out of conference for their game on Saturday, December 10th as they take on Storm Lake.

Treynor at Audubon

Treynor 73

Audubon 44

The Audubon Wheelers looked to match up well against Treynor Tuesday night, but quickly the Cardinals showed off their scoring potential.

The Wheelers came into the contest hungry for a win as they were 0-3 with two close losses on the season. Treynor grabbed their first win of the season against Missouri Valley and were able to put up 60+ points in both of their first two games of the season. In the first quarter, the Wheelers kept a steady pace of scoring with Edward Miller pushing his way into the lane and putting up six points. Treynor too was able to push the ball into the paint while showing their potential beyond the arc with Ethan Konz putting up two-three pointers. Treynor held on to a close 14-11 lead entering the second quarter. The Cardinals realized the threat Miller posed in the paint and eliminated him from the equation with solid defense. The Cardinals took a three-point lead and quickly made it 12 when they went on a 9-0 scoring run to start the second quarter. Audubon didn’t have many answers for Treynor as the Cardinals extended their lead to 31-18 at halftime. While Miller didn’t see any points in the second quarter, Collin Bauer stepped up with five points in the quarter.

In the second half, the Cardinals did not waste time attacking the basket. Jace Tams of the Cardinals showed he could score in transition and got himself 12 points in the third quarter along with Alan Young putting up six points of his own for Treynor. Audubon fared a bit better in the scoring department, with Miller draining a three pointer to start the quarter and getting five points scored. It was Carson Bauer who stepped up a bit with six points in the third quarter as the Wheelers still trailed 57-34 entering the fourth quarter. Treynor’s consistent scoring kept their momentum going in the final eight minutes of the contest and eventually, they would claim victory with a final score of 73-44.

Edward Millers ended up leading the team with 15 points with Carson Bauer close behind with 13 points and Collin Bauer also scoring in the double digits with 10 points. The Wheelers conclude their week of competition with another home contest on Friday, December 9th when they host AHSTW.

AHSTW At IKM-Manning

AHSTW 52

IKM-Manning 39

IKM-Manning suffered their first loss of the season as AHSTW used a 12-0 run in the 3rd quarter to stretch open a tight game. The Wolves kept fighting and pulled within 10 points in the 4th quarter and had a couple possessions with a chance to cut it to single digits. Their effort all game, shows this team is capable of making noise this season, falling to a top 10 ranked team in Class 2A. IKM-Manning battled hard on the boards against a team with a lot more length then they have. A few turnovers in the 3rd quarter run and two missed opportunities in the 4th quarter down 10 are things they can build off of. The game was tied twice and had 2 lead changes and the Wolves largest deficit into the middle of the 3rd quarter was 7.

Ross Kusel and Caden Keller were the only Wolves to score in the 1st half, but they only trailed 23-16  at half. AHSTW hit a three to open the scoring, but IKM-Manning hung tough with Kusel hitting a two and Caden Keller putting them up 4-3. The Vikings took the lead back but Kusel tied it at 7 with a three. Caden Keller tied it again at 9 but AHSTW went on a 6-0 run. Kusel drained a bucket to pull IKM-Manning within 15-11, then Caden Keller scored to make it 15-13. Another 6-0 run by the Vikings helped them lead 23-16 at half.

Ross Kusel hit a three early in the 3rd, pulling them to 23-19 but AHSTW answered with a 12-0 run to lead 35-19. The Wolves fought back in the 4th, after trailing by 16 at the end of the 3rd, they chipped away. Ben Ramsey scored to make it 43-29, Caden Keller knocked down a three, Ramsey hit a pair of free throws, then Ross Kusel hit a three, making it 47-37. The Wolves had two possessions with a chance to get the deficit to single digits but couldn’t get a bucket.

Ross Kusel led the Wolves with 19 points and 5 rebounds. Caden Keller had 13 points, 7 rebounds and blocked 3 shots. Cooper Irlmeier added 9 rebounds and Ben Ramsey scored 7 points while dishing out 5 assists.

West Harrison at Coon Rapids Bayard

West Harrison 66

Coon Rapids Bayard 33

The Coon Rapids Bayard Crusaders ran into a familiar foe Tuesday night as they took on the undefeated West Harrison Hawkeyes.

West Harrison brought back plenty of talent from their state team last year and looks sharp again this season. Coon Rapids Bayard also came into this contest undefeated with wins against Stanton, Paton Churdan, and Audubon. The Hawkeyes were explosive from the start and got themselves out to a 18-9 lead going into the second quarter. While the Crusaders upped their intensity and put up 13 points in the next quarter, so too did West Harrison as they’d end up with 20 points in the quarter and led 38-22 at halftime. Cal Heydon has been a great player so far this season for the Crusaders, but his impact on the court was lessened by the Hawkeyes. Heydon still ended up with nine points after all was said and done.

In the second half, West Harrison completely controlled the third quarter and outscored Coon Rapids Bayard 18-2, extending their lead to 56-24. The final eight minutes ended up being a fair bit closer with the Crusaders only falling one point short at 10-9, but eventually fell to West Harrison by a final score of 66-33.

For the Crusaders, it was Cade Behrens who had himself a solid game with 14 points and five rebounds. Heydon was able to get nine points along with seven rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. The Lynx came off a big 82-34 route of Pocahontas Area as the Titans were 2-0 with wins over Manson NW Webster and East Sac. The Lynx showed off their talents on both sides of the ball in the first half and never gave up control of the lead. They’d hold South Central Calhoun to six points and led 15-6 going into the second quarter. Webster City got another 15 points up on the board with the Titans trying to look for answers with eight points in the second quarter, trailing 30-14 at halftime. Gavin Batta was able to lead the team in points with 10 with Eli Wheelock close behind with nine points.
