Kuemper picked up a huge road win in the Hawkeye 10 Conference on Saturday, never trailing in the game on their way to their first win of the season. Michael Kasperbauer started the game with back-to-back baskets, then Dawson Gifford got hot in the 2nd quarter, helping Kuemper extend the lead from 16-15 to 31-20 with four-three’s in that stretch to go with a three from Ben Gerken. The Monarchs pulled within one twice more in the game, but the Knights had an answer each time with Brock Badding knocking down a couple big three’s late, helping them extend their lead from 41-40 to 52-46. A nifty Carson Kanne catch and shoot in the lane kept the Knights up by two scores late.

Michael Kasperbauer hit a two and a three to open the game and the Knights were off and running. Dawson Gifford extended their lead to 7-2 before Kasperbauer hit another three, making it 13-4. Denison Schleswig battled back as they would all game and trailed the Knights 15-13 after the 1st quarter. DJ Vonnahme, didn’t look for his shot much in the game, scored when his team needed by rebound, defended and found his teammates all game. Vonnahme knocked down a free throw early in the 2nd quarter, then Dawson Gifford took over. He knocked down a three, making it 19-15, then hit a second, putting the Knights up 22-17. Gifford felt in a rhythm and hit two more three’s after Ben Gerken knocked down a three to put the Knights up 25-20. Gifford’s streak helped the Knights go up 31-20. They led 37-29 at half on a Tregan Beiter three  but couldn’t put away one of the conference preseason favorites.

After a Kasperbauer bucket for the Knights early in the 3rd put Kuemper up 39-31, the Monarchs chipped away, pulling within 39-38. Kuemper kept the lead with a bucket, but Denison Schleswig pulled within one again at 41-40. Brock Badding stepped up hitting a baseline three, making it 44-40. Denison Schleswig kept it close, trailing 46-42 until DJ Vonnahme hit a three. Denison Schleswig rallied again, cutting it to 49-46 but Badding answered with another three. The Monarchs kept battling, staying within 4 but a Carson Kanne catch and shoot in the lane, then another Badding three and Kuemper was up 7. DJ Vonnahme helped seal the game with a pair of free throws and Badding kept it a two possession game with a big free throw down the stretch.

Brock Badding led Kuemper with 17 points on five-three’s. DJ Vonnahme had a great all-around game with 6 points but 11 rebounds, 9 assists and 5 steals. Dawson Gifford added 14 points with four-three’s. Michael Kasperbauer finished with 10 points and Carson Kanne added 10 points.

The Knights improve to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the Hawkeye 10 Conference. They host Red Oak on Friday.
