Coon Rapids Bayard led 9-0 to start the game, holding Audubon scoreless until 2:08 left in the quarter, but the Wheelers pulled within 3 in the 4th quarter and had a chance. Coon Rapids Bayard responded and pulled away down the stretch to win their season opener 60-51. The Wheelers showed grit battling back but start the season 0-1.
Cade Behrens hit a big three early as Coon Rapids Bayard built a 9-0 lead, playing tough man-to-man defense against a Wheeler team learning a new system. Aaron Olsen broke the Wheelers drought with a steal and layup with 2:08 left in the 1st quarter as the Crusaders led 13-4. Lance Clayburg was tough inside and Behrens was keeping things alive on the boards. Behrens showed his range on the offensive end hitting a three, putting Coon Rapids Bayard ahead 20-6 early in the 2nd quarter but Collin Bauer cranked up the defense for Audubon and the Wheelers used a flurry of steals to pull within 22-14 on a Carson Bauer steal and layup. Edward Miller scored inside and hit a free throw, pulling the Wheelers whiting 23-19 late but Lance Clayburg powered in a shot in traffic, adding the free throw with under :02 left in the half and the Crusaders led 26-19 at half.
The Crusaders extended the lead to 28-19 early in the 3rd quarter with Lance Clayburg scoring again to extend it to 35-23 late in the 3rd. Audubon wasn’t going away easy, trailing 41-31 after the 3rd quarter. Aaron Olsen got rolling for the Wheelers in the 4th quarter with a two-point basket, then hit a pair of threes, pulling Audubon within 47-44. Just when it looked like Audubon may rally, freshman Cal Heydon took over for the Crusaders. He was able to get to the rim, hitting his free throws, but it was a right wing three that extended the lead to 54-44. The Wheelers could only pull within 58-51 in the final 3:00.
Lance Clayburg had a team high 28 points and 7 rebounds for the Crusaders while Cal Heydon finished with 20 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals. Cade Behrens nearly had a triple double with 8 points and 11 rebounds. The Crusaders were 7-8 from the free throw line.
Aaron Olsen had a team high16 points leading a balanced Wheelers attack. Collin Bauer had 12 points, Carson Bauer 11 points and Edward Miller 11 points. Miller had a team high 11 rebounds along with 3 assists and 2 steals. Carson Bauer had a team high 4 steals, Collin Bauer had 3 steals as the Wheelers had 14 steals as a team. They also hit 7-9 free throws.
Coon Rapids Bayard heads home to host Stanton on Tuesday while Audubon hosts Missouri Valley on Tuesday.
