South Central Calhoun opened the season with a loss on Tuesday, falling behind early only to battle back and have a chance with three minutes left in the game. The Titans struggled from the field, making 15-54 shots and only 4 of 20 shots from three point range. Those struggles also were felt at the free throw line, making 12 of 21. The early part of the game was obvious that Storm Lake had played a game already and it was the first game for a inexperienced group of Titans. South Central Calhoun fell behind 12-0 to start the game.
Neither team could score early as nerves and good defense kept the game scoreless until deep into the first quarter. Storm Lake hit a pair of free throws for the games first points, then got a three, making it 5-0. They ended up scoring the first 12 points before Riley Batta found Brenna McAlister to get the Titans on the board. Storm Lake extended the lead to 15-2 and led 15-4 after the 1st quarter. Olivia Toms came in and turned up the Titans energy. She fed Sophie McKinney for a bucket, then hit a pair of free throws to pull the Titans within 20-6. Riley Batta knocked down a pair of free throws for her first points of the game as the Titans missed several inside shots, then tried to rely on the deep ball. Kylee Schleisman hit Sophie McKinney for a three and South Central Calhoun had pulled within 23-11. Schleisman hit a three and it appeared the Titans would cut into the deficit but Storm Lake answered with a three and a pair of free throws. Riley Batta scored inside, pulling the Titans to within 31-19 but a Storm Lake three made it 34-19 at half.
The Titans came out with some pressure defense in the 3rd quarter, helping them score with a Kylee Schleisman basket and a Brenna McAlister free throw. Riley Batta drained a three and South Central Calhoun pulled within 36-25. Storm Lake answered again. Adeeya Yanga had a strong night in the paint and Avery DeHaan had an answer all night for the Titans. The lead grew to 43-25 before the Titans started to make another run. Batta scored inside, Kylee Schleisman found Batta inside again and South Central Calhoun was down 43-30. A Brenna McAlister bucket near the end of the 3rd quarter made it 45-33 heading to the 4th quarter. Riley Batta hit a pair of free throws to start the 4th quarter, making it a 10 point game. Olivia Toms picked up an assist on a bucket by Batta and the Titans trailed by 9. Brenna McAlister cut it to 8 with a bucket, at 46-38. After a Storm Lake basket, Kylee Schleisman assisted Riley Batta, then assisted Brenna McAlister and the Titans were down 48-42. Avery DeHaan had went to the bench with her 4th foul, but quickly checked into the game. She hit a three, then drained another three after a Storm Lake steal. A Tornadoes steal and layup put the game out of reach at 56-42 with under 3:00 remaining.
Riley Batta had a team high 25 points along with 9 rebounds and 4 steals. Brenna McAlister added 8 points and 9 rebounds. Kylee Schleisman had 6 points while grabbing 7 rebounds and passed out 4 assists. Olivia Toms was a sparkplug all night long, scoring 2 points, grabbing 4 rebounds, dishing out 3 assists and making 3 steals.
The Titans begin the season 0-1 and will travel to South Hamilton on Tuesday on KIKD 106.7.
