Brincks Exteriors Sports Report: Kuemper Falls in 2nd Half At West Sioux Friday

West Sioux pulled away in the second half after Kuemper had a couple chances early to take the lead. Kuemper turned it over on downs inside Falcon territory on their first two drives, with the second drive ending at the West Sioux 5-yard line. The Falcons got their offense going in the 2nd quarter, building a 14-7 lead at half before pulling away in the 3rd quarter. The Knights struggled to get the running game going, finishing with 53-yards on 18 carries while throwing it 41 times for 221-yards. They expected to be able to run the ball and stop the West Sioux run which had used the outside run game most of the regular season. The Falcons pounded the ball up the middle most of the night, setting up an option play that Kuemper struggled to stop. The Falcons finished with 412-yards rushing while throwing for only 98-yards on 15 attempts.

Kuemper opened the game with the ball and moved inside West Sioux territory before turning it over on downs at the Falcon 45-yard line. The defense was sharp, forcing a three and out for West Sioux and the Knights would march from their own 12-yard line to the Falcon 5. The 14 play drive stalled out their and West Sioux grabbed the momentum. The Falcons marched right down the field, scoring on a 15-yard touchdown from Dylan Wiggins to Brady Lynott, capping a 10 play drive. The Knights went three and out on their next possession and West Sioux struck quickly. Wiggins hit Brady Lynott for a 55-yard pass to the Knights 1-yard line and Lynott scored moments later, making it 14-0 with 4:51 left in the half. Kuemper had to punt again and West Sioux looked to capitalize but  Wiggins pass on 1st down slipped out of his hands, right into the waiting arms of Kyle Sundrup who returned the ball to the West Sioux 18 before being drug down from behind. The penalty gave Kuemper the ball on the Falcon 9-yard line and after the Knights had a touchdown pass called back on a penalty. DJ Vonnahme found a sliding Ben Gerken in the corner of the end zone and Kuemper pulled within 14-7. West Sioux nearly scored before the half but Gerken intercepted a pass in the end zone with 19.3 remaining.

West Sioux got the ball to start the 2nd half, returning the kick to the 50-yard line. They scored 6 plays later on a 4-yard touchdown run by Carter Bultman. The Falcons led 21-7 with 9:30 left in the 3rd. They added a 46-yard touchdown in their next possession as Bultman got the sideline on the option and out ran the Knights defense to the end zone. A Falcon field goal from 29-yards with 1:53 left in the quarter expanded the lead to 31-7. Kuemper had three possession start in the 3rd quarter. Two were three and out and the other was a turnover on downs after an 8 play drive. A Darren Wilbert interception early in the 4th quarter turned into a 50-yard touchdown run for Dylan Wiggins and West Sioux put the game out of reach.

DJ Vonnahme ended the game 20-35 passing for 217 yards with a touchdown and interception. He ran f0r 28-yards on 4 carries. Chris Mohr had 4 catches for 46-yards and Ben Gerken added 6 catches for 61-yards and a touchdown. Logan Sibenaller added 4 catches for 24-yards. Will Simons and Chris Mohr had 7 tackles each and Jake Hausman added 6 tackles. Ben Gerken and Kyle Sundrup had interceptions. Chris Mohr punted 4 times for a 35.8 yard average.

The Knights finished the season 8-2.
