Underwood At Kuemper- Class 2A Region 3
Kuemper 3
Underwood 1
25-16, 23-25, 25-20, 25-18
Kuemper came just a couple points short of sweeping Underwood but they had to fight for every point from midway through set two until the final point of set four as they advance to the Regional Semifinal on Monday with a three sets to one win. It looked like it could be a quick night for Kuemper, building a 6-1 lead in set one behind a nice service run from Aubrey Heuton. The Knights knew Alizabeth Jacobsen was going to be the focal point for the Eagles and they did a nice job getting blocks and touches on her in set one. The Eagles struggled against the Knight block and serve helping the Knights build their lead to 11-4. Underwood settled in a bit, pulling within 12-9 but Kuemper answered and a Sophie Badding block extended the lead to 18-10. Lauren Boell had one of her 9 kills and Kuemper went up 19-10. Frannie Glynn brought the fans to their feet with a kill, giving Kuemper a 25-16 win. Kuemper kept the momentum in set two, jumping out quickly, leading 11-4. Underwood scored 3 of the next 4 points, but Kuemper answered again, going up 18-9. The Knights had all the momentum but it changed in a flash as the Eagles ran off 11 straight points to lead 20-18. The Knights stopped the run briefly but Underwood pulled away to a 24-19 lead. Brianna Wittrock went back to serve for Kuemper and helped the Knights pull within 24-23 but the Eagles prevailed and tied the match at a set apiece. Ashlyn Badding started with the serve in set three and before she was done with her serve the Knights had built an 8-0 lead. Underwood again wasn’t going away without a fight, cutting the Knights lead to 10-8 but this time the Knights answered as Frannie Glynn and Brianna Wittrock took charge at the net and Kuemper built the lead to 7 and won on another Frannie Glynn kill. She would finish with 9 kills and the Knights won set three 25-20.
Kuemper didn’t want to go five sets and Underwood wasn’t going to go home without forcing a fifth set. Set four was intense and tight until midway through when Kuemper took control. There were 11 ties and 8 lead changes by the time the score was tied at 15. Brianna Wittrock took control at that point, picking up back-to-back kills, helping the Knights score 6 straight points to lead 21-15. Wittrock also made a couple nice plays in the back row during the run. The Knights would pull away to win 25-18 to advance.
Brianna Wittrock, Frannie Glynn and Lauren Boell all had 9 kills to lead the Knights while Aubrey Heuton added 8 kills, Sophie Badding had 7 kills and Kaci Peter finished with 6 kills. Ashlyn Badding had a team high 18 assists with Macy Simon finishing with 17. Brianna Wittrock, Macy Simon and Kaylie Simon all had 8 digs, Brooke Rohe added 5 digs. Frannie Glynn was strong at the net finishing with a team high 5 blocks with Sophie Badding adding 4 blocks. East Sac 0
25-19, 25-23, 25-19
The East Sac Raiders had chances to maintain a lead, but the Ridge View Raptors kept swinging well and ended up with the win Wednesday night.
The Raiders (15-14) had already seen the Raptors (28-7) twice prior to tonight’s match, and lost both matches 2-1. Ridge View had also seen plenty of success in their own conference being crowned regular season conference champions and conference tournament champions, not dropping a single set. The Raiders were down early in the set at 10-5, but started to mount a comeback late in the set. Thanks to some nice serving from Kenna Meyer, the Raiders were able to tie up the set at 16-16. Despite that, the Raptors continued to find gaps in the Raiders defense and won set one 25-19. Set two was the closest set of the night. East Sac got off to a nice 3-0 lead to start and went back and forth with Ridge View tying the set. The Raiders held on to a small lead throughout most of the set, until the Raptors tied up the set at 19-19 and slowly chipped away to come away with a 25-23 set win. Kenna Meyer had another nice service run as the Raiders held a nice 17-13 lead at one time. Meyer in this game ended up with five ace serves in total.
Set three was again close but Ridge View continued to keep up their pace. They were able to hit cross-court well from the right side of the net and went setting middle with East Sac sending up one blocker, the Raptors were able to hit the back serving line well. East Sac adjusted well to the block by playing with it and getting some tools. Neither team had a clear advantage in set three with Ridge View leading 10-5 to start and East Sac tying the set at 12-12. After more back and forth, the Raptors broke a 15-15 tie and got out ahead to win the set 25-19.

Kate Vondrak led the team in kills with 11, Meyer was defensively sound as well with eight digs, and Mary Bontrager kept her pace setting the ball with eight assists.
