Kuemper had to dig deep after falling behind 2-1 against Lewis Central as both teams entered the match undefeated in the Hawkeye 10 Conference. The Knights had played 4 matches on Monday on the road, went five sets at home on Tuesday and desperately wanted to take command of the conference race. They did just that, coming back to win the final two sets, improving to 27-4 overall and for this night, more importantly 7-0 in the Hawkeye 10. The Knights came out sharp, playing aggressively, passing well and cruising to a 25 to 16 win. The tide changed in set two and the Knights became tentative, tipping, pushing and struggling to pass, allowing Lewis Central to gain the momentum. The Titans were more aggressive in sets two and three, picking up comfortable wins in both sets, 25-16 and 25-17. The Knights showed great character in winning the final two sets. The fourth set started evenly with both teams scoring four points but Knights went on a run to lead 8-5, forcing a Titan time out. That sparked Lewis Central who battle back to led 15-14. Kuemper again responded, using a 4-0 run to lead 18-15. They extended the lead to 22-17, then scored the final three points to tie the match at two and send it to a decisive fifth set. Kuemper started quickly, leading 5-2. Lewis Central called a timeout, but couldn’t close the gap. Kaci Peter had a couple big kills and Kuemper led 9-5, then 11-6. The Titans made a run, a pair of blocks cut the Knights led to 12-9, then another Titan point pulled them within two. That would be as close as they would get as the Knights pulled out a 15-11 win, finishing off the rally from down 2-1.
Sophie Badding had a monster night defensively at the net, finishing with 9 blocks to go with 8 kills. Kaci Peter came alive in sets four and five and paced the Knights with 13 kills. Frannie Glynn was outstanding in the middle with 10 kills. Macy Simons and Ashlyn Badding set the ball well, Badding finished with 19 assists and 8 digs while Simons had 16 assists, 8 digs and added 3 aces. Kuemper had 19 blocks with Brianna Wittrock chipping in 3 to that total. Kaylie Simons had a team high 14 digs.
The Knights finished the week 5-1 with two come from behind wins in the conference. They are off until October 8th at the Hampton Dumont Tournament.

IKM-Manning showed good fight, after falling in the first two sets, they rallied from down by eight in set three to lose 25-22. The Wolves fell behind 4-0 in set one and trailed 7-0 in set two. They fought back in the first set, pulling within 6-3 but the Lady Vikes went on a 8-0 run to take a commanding lead. The led would grow to 22-4 before the Wolves closed the set, highlighted by an ace from Laura McCarville. In set two the Wolves cut the 8-0 deficit to 8-3 and 12-7 but weren’t able to close the gap any more. The Lady Vikes scored six of the last seven points. IKM-Manning struck first in set three, leading 1-0. They hung tough, trailing 10-8 but AHSTW opened it up with a 4-0 run. The lead would grow to 22-16 but IKM-Manning kept fighting, closing the match on a 6-3 run.
Kylie Powers had a team high 4 kills, Laura McCarville added 3 kills and Mabel Langel finished with 2 kills. Amber Halbur finished with 6 assists. Anna Stangl paced the back row defense with 9 digs and Emmie Ring and Eryn Ramsey each had 4 digs. Stangl also had a team high 2 aces.
The Wolves fall to 1-11 overall and 0-6 in the Western Iowa Conference. They head to the Tri Center Tournament on Saturday.

East Sac rallied down two sets to one to pull out a victory that keeps them in the upper half of the Twin Lakes Conference. The Raiders dropped the first set, took set two, but fell in set three. They were able to escape in set four with a hard fought three point win, forcing a fifth set, which they dominated. The Raiders hit .135 with 51 kills total and two hitters with 15 or more kills. A key in their rally was the defense as the net, where they finished with 9 blocks.
Kenna Meyer and Kate Vondrak were swinging aggressively. Meyer led the Raiders with 19 kills, Vondrak added 15 kills with a .200 hitting efficiency. Kendall Quirk added 6 kills and hit .400. Mary Bontrager had a team high 21 assists. Meyer and Vondrak weren’t just hitting the ball well. They led the team in digs as well with Meyer having 13 digs and Vondrak 10 digs to go with a team high 6 blocks. Greeley Schlepp added 8 digs. Meyer finished with 3 of the teams 4 aces.
The Raiders move to 14-12 overall and 4-3 in the Twin Lakes Conference. They head to South Central Calhoun next Thursday on KIKD 106.7.

The South Central Calhoun Titans had an entertaining match against a talented Manson NW Webster team Thursday night.
The Titans currently sit atop the Twin Lakes Conference along with Newell Fonda as the Cougars are trying to climb the ladder. The Titans stayed in control for a majority of the first set. They’d get up 8-4 and 15-10 until Manson NW Webster started to respond. The Cougars cut down the lead to 18-17 before South Central Calhoun rattled off a 7-1 run to end the set 25-18. Riley Batta and Keira Hammen were both swinging well in the front row and gave the Titans the momentum early offensively. The Cougars started to play around the blocks the Titans were putting up, getting plenty of tools in set two. Nine ties happened in this set with Manson NW Webster leading late 23-19. In a blink of an eye, the Titans were able to get back in the game and eventually win 27-25. Batta and Hammen would anchor the offense for the Titans, putting up 16 and 11 kills respectively. Jayci Graeve was also setting very well tonight, putting up 38 assists.
Set three was a wash for the Cougars with a lot of energy used up in set two. Both teams traded the lead and tied the set over and over until the Titans broke a six all tie and started to distance themselves. South Central Calhoun kept attacking well into the doughnut and got some tools of their own, coming away with a 25-12 victory and a 3-0 sweep of the Cougars. Other stat leaders include Mollie Monahan who had four blocks and Kylee Schleisman who ended up with nine digs.
The win elevates South Central Calhoun to 29-5 overall on the season and 8-0 in the Twin Lakes Conference. They have a big rivalry game coming up on Thursday, October 6th when they take on East Sac at home.

The Coon Rapids Bayard Crusaders had a big Rolling Valley Conference game Thursday night as they took on Boyer Valley.
The Bulldogs sat at 3-2 in the conference and the Crusaders were at 2-3 and came out looking for another win. Coon Rapids Bayard had a good set one where they kept up with Boyer Valley until the Bulldogs pulled away to win 25-19. The defense for the Crusaders was solid tonight as Anna Hart and Lacie Davis both led the team with 18 digs each. Offensively, Coon Rapids Bayard Head Coach Marissa Dembinski says they were unable to consistently put the ball away. Boyer Valley kept their momentum going in set two to win 25-13, and came up with the same score in set three, 25-13, to win the match 3-0.
Other stat leaders for the Crusaders include Gracy Johnson who was their main setter with 10 assists and Malia Clayburg and Lydia Hofbauer who led the team in kills with four each. The loss drops Coon Rapids Bayard to 2-4 in the Rolling Valley Conference and 5-17 overall. They are back on the court on Tuesday, October 4th when they travel to take on Exira-EHK.
