Volleyball Results for Tuesday, September 6th

 

Kuemper and Clarinda At Denison Schleswig

Kuemper had to battle in the 2nd set but was able to pull it out 28-26, allowing them to  keep a sweep alive. They completed the sweep, one set later with a convincing 25-17 win, taking two of the three sets easily. The Knights cruised in the 1st set, not getting pushed on their way to a 25-13 win. Clarinda battled in the 2nd set, pushing the Knights into extra points. Kuemper was good at the net and in the back row, holding the Cardinals to a .093 hitting percentage with 28 kills. 

The Knights hit the ball well, finishing with 41 kills. Clarinda did out block Kuemper 11 to 4 but the Knights back row picked up the slack, finishing with 43 digs and allowing only 1 ace. Kuemper won the serve battle with 3 aces. 

Ashlyn Badding led the Knights with 28 assists while Macy Simons finished with 15 assists. Sophie Badding was big in the middle with 17 kills while Audrey Heuton finished with 10 kills. Sophie also led the team with 3 blocks. Kaylie Simons had a team high 16 digs while Brooke Rohe and Brianna Wittrock both had 6 digs. Kaylie Simons had 2 of the team’s 3 aces.

Kuemper vs Denison

Kuemper completed their two-match sweep as they defeated Denison Schleswig in three sets. 

The Knights brought the heat in set one by taking the momentum and never looking back. Kuemper’s offense swung well and won the set 25-14. Brianne Wittrock had a great offensive game with 10 kills, a team high. Sophie Badding took some nice shots as well with seven kills. Kuemper continued their dominance with their best set of the match, winning 25-12 in set two. Despite the Monarchs out-digging the Knights, Kuemper was the clear favorite in kills with a 33-13 advantage. They were able to round out a solid match with the three-set sweep, winning 25-14 in set three. 

The two match wins elevate the Knights to 9-2 overall on the season and extend their win streak to eight games. They will wrap up their week of competition by competing in the South Central Calhoun Blaster Master Tournament on Saturday, September 10th.

Carroll At North Polk

The Carroll Tigers slipped one game below .500 as they had two close sets, but ultimately lost to North Polk Tuesday night. 

The Comets, coming in with a record of 13-2, were swinging from the get-go as they were able to get past Carroll in set one 25-13. Carroll was able to bring some momentum to their side in set two and kept the set close. North Polk fought hard and ultimately came up on the winning end by a score of 25-21. The Tigers had some big playmakers in this game, two of them being Katelyn Aden and Shayne Aschinger who both ended the game with four kills each. Madison Tunning was also a strong presence defensively with 22 digs on the night. Carroll kept their composure in set three and was once again keeping up with North Polk. The Comets, though, were too much and were victorious in set three 25-17 and won the match 3-0 in sets. Carroll Head Coach Mikayla Klenk said North Polk had some good defensive plays and that her team was ahead in sets two and three but couldn’t pull it off. 

The loss drops the Tigers to 3-4 overall on the season. Their week of competition concludes on Saturday, September 10th when they compete in the South Central Calhoun Master Blaster Tournament.

Audubon played host to Madrid and Glidden Ralston Tuesday night in a triangular where the Wheelers went 2-0 and the Wildcats went 1-1. 

In the game featuring Audubon and Glidden Ralston, the Wildcats stayed close to the Wheelers, but Audubon was able to stay out ahead. Glidden Ralston’s offense kept them in the game, but Audubon was a bit better and won game one 25-18. Serve receiving for Glidden Ralston was a bit rough at times with Audubon picking up 13 aces in total. Game two had its moments where Glidden Ralston kept up with the Wheelers, but Audubon was able to stay ahead once again and win 25-16. Glidden Ralston’s Paige Klocke led the way offensively with five kills and Lauren Klocke was solid defensively with four blocks and four kills.

Audubon vs Madrid

While Audubon had two great matches against Glidden Ralston, they were met with resistance against Madrid. 

The Tigers throughout set one kept up with the Wheelers threatening to take the match, but Audubon found momentum to win set one 25-19. Set two was much the same, more pressure from Madrid and the Wheelers trying to win in two sets. Madrid was met with the same result in set two, so close to winning but Audubon edging them out to win 25-19. Mattie Nielsen and Harlow Miller both were able to record 6 kills in this game with Kylee Hartl recording an impressive six aces against the Tigers. 

The two wins in this triangular bring Audubon’s record to 6-4. They close out their week of competition with a home game against Riverside on Thursday, September 8th.

Glidden Ralston had plenty of success in set one against Madrid but were taken to extra points in the second set.

Madrid had little answers for the Wildcats in set one as they were only able to put up seven points, losing 25-7. The team of Paige Klocke and Vanessa Koehler were able to put up six kills each in this match while Tiela Janssen was a big support defensively with 16 total digs. Madrid found their groove in set two and took Glidden Ralston to extra points. Despite the big shift in momentum, Glidden Ralston was able to grind out the second set and wind up victorious by a score of 26-24, winning the match in two sets. 

After these two games, Glidden Ralston improves to 2-3 overall on the season. They close out the week with a road game at Paton Churdan on Thursday, September 8th.

IKM-Manning played host to East Sac and Coon Rapids Bayard Tuesday in a triangular where the Wolves went 1-1, East Sac was undefeated at 2-0, and Audubon fell 0-2 in matches. 

IKM-Manning in their first game of the night were able to nab their first win of the season against Coon Rapids Bayard. The Wolves played well defensively, moving along with Coon Rapid Bayard’s offense and swinging at the ball well too. While Coon Rapids Bayard kept the pressure on, it was IKM-Manning who came away with the 25-17 win. Laura McCarville impressed in this match, leading the team with seven kills. Malia Clayburg of Coon Rapids Bayard had one kill less than McCarville with six. In set two, IKM-Manning started to settle in and played well, coming away with a 25-14 set two win and winning the match 2-0 in sets. Along with Clayburg, Gracy Johnson had a solid match for the Crusaders, recording six digs and seven assists.

Coon Rapids Bayard stayed on the court for the second game of the triangular as they took on East Sac in a tough battle.

East Sac’s combination of hard swings and plays at the net proved to be a big advantage against the Crusaders. In set one, East Sac was able to hold on to its early momentum to win 25-14. While Addisen Ehler led the team with five kills total, multiple players played a hand in their offensive attack. Kenna Meyer was able to end the game with four kills all together and five different players recorded two or more assists with Kendall Quirk recording five. Coon Rapids Bayard were just unable to keep pace with East Sac’s speed. Lydia Hofbauer led the Crusaders with three kills and Lacie Davis had six digs in this match. 

In set two, East Sac hit the ground running and didn’t look back, winning by 15 points by a score of 25-10 and winning the match 2-0 in sets. The Crusaders after both their losses will fall to 3-10 overall on the season. They are off until Monday, September 12th when they host CAM Anita.

In the final match of the triangular, East Sac matched up with IKM-Manning and the Wolves were close to taking both sets one and two. 

East Sac’s powerful swings were met with nice digs by IKM-Manning who kept up with the Raiders in set one. With a boisterous student section cheering them on, the Wolves were close to taking set one, but fell 25-19. Kate Vondrak was able to break her silence from their first match and ended up with 11 kills against IKM-Manning. Kenna Meyer also had a nice offensive match with eight kills. Kylie Powers led the Wolves offensively with five kills with help from Megan Williams who ended the match with four kills. Set two saw the Wolves mount a late game comeback with East Sac having 24 points. Despite a nice stretch of points, the Wolves would ultimately fall 25-18 to East Sac and the Raiders went 2-0 at this triangular. 

East Sac improves to 8-7 overall on the season with these two wins and IKM-Manning will improve to 1-2 overall on the season with their win over Coon Rapids Bayard. The Raiders are back in action on Thursday, September 8th as they travel to take on West Bend Mallard. The Wolves will host Missouri Valley on that same day. Tyler Brunner will broadcast the Missouri Valley at IKM-Manning match on 93.7 KKRL beginning around 7:00 Thursday.
