East Sac served well late in the first two sets, pulling away for comfortable wins in sets that were tight until the mid point. The Raiders hung on to win the third set, picking up a needed sweep to improve their record to 2-5 overall and 2-1 in the Twin Lakes Conference. The Raiders hit a .303 on the night finishing with 35 kills, having seven girls with a kill, two in double figures and one more nearly in double digits. East Sac won the first and second set on ace serves, finishing with 10 aces and 8 errors.

The Raiders went up 2-0 in set one before falling behind 4-3. They quickly responded going ahead for good at 7-6. They couldn’t shake the Indians who tied the set at 9 and trailed 15-13 midway through the set. Addisen Ehler helped the Raiders put the set away, serving a 7-0 run to end it. She had three aces during the run and nearly had another but Kate Vondrak finished the play with a nice kill on an overpass on the serve receive. The Raiders trailed only once in set two, falling behind 4-3 but gaining the lead back at 5-4. Pocahontas Area hung tough again, trailing 11-10 after tying the set at 9. The Raiders were strong on the outside early in the match and were attacking line. As Pocahontas Area adjusted the Raiders began to find success setting the middle. They closed the set on a 4-0 run and Kenna Meyer matched Addisen Ehler who won set one with an ace by taking set two on an ace. Pocahontas Area wasn’t going away without a fight and they took their last lead in set three at 15-14. The Raiders quickly took the lead back, 16-15 but Pocahontas Area tied the set at 19. East Sac edged away and ended the match with a kill by Addisen Ehler.

Kenna Meyer paced the Raiders at the net with 12 kills while Kate Vondrak added 11 kills and Addisen Ehler finished with 8 kills. Mary Bontrager had a team high 14 assists and Kendall Quirk finished with 9. Greeley Schlepp and Ehler tied with 6 digs, a team high and Kate Vondrak paced the defense at the net with 3 blocks. Ehler had a great night serving, with 5 aces while Kenna Meyer added 3 aces.

The Raiders head to the Ridge View Tournament on Saturday.

South Central Calhoun got everyone involved as they were able to control the match with GTRA. The Titans hit a .110, led by a strong night from Riley Batta. She finished with a team  high 8 kills, hitting .368. Addy Geno had 4 kills and hit .250. With a comfortable lead most of the match the Titans played a lot players, gaining them valuable experience. They had nine players with at least one kill. Their strength in the match was their serving, finishing with 12 aces with eight different players getting at least one ace, led by Brenna McAlister with 3 and Jaycie Graeve and Norah Riedesel each with 2. Kylee Schleisman had a good night as libero, finishing with a team high 15 digs, Riley Batta added 9 digs and Brenna McAlister and Alexa Holm both had 7 digs. South Central Calhoun served 90.5%.

South Central Calhoun picked up the sweep, beating Storm Lake St Mary’s in three, only allowing them to score in double figures in the last set. Defensively they were sharp, finishing with 47 digs with nine girls with at least one dig. Riley Batta led the way with 11 digs, Elysia Smith added 9 digs and Kylee Schleisman and Sam Stuart both had 7 digs. The Titans served 95.9% with 12 aces led by Norah Riedesel with 4 aces, Brooklyn Pruitt and Kylee Schleisman both had 2 aces. South Central Calhoun swung very well against Storm Lake St Mary’s, hitting .388 with Addy Geno hitting .583, Riley Batta .444 and Keira Hammen at .300. Geno led the team with 8 kills, Hammen finished with 6 kills, Batta had 5 kills and Brenna McAlister finished with 4 kills. Keira Hammen had the only two blocks of the night for the Titans in the win.

South Central Calhoun improved to 7-4 overall and 2-0 in the Twin Lakes Conference. They will  host their Early Bird Tournament on Saturday.

Glidden Ralston at West Central Valley

Glidden Ralston was able to compete well with West Central Valley, but in a decisive set five, West Central Valley was able to win the match Thursday. 

Glidden Ralston competed well in the first set, keeping West Central Valley in sight, but they were unable to pull away and lost 25-19. Glidden Ralston pushed back in set two and came away with a close 25-21 win. Set three was a bit more favorable for Glidden Ralston where their defense kept West Central Valley below 20 points for the 25-17 win. Lauren Hulsing and Vanessa Koehler were two of a kind defensively, putting up five blocks each. Koehler was also second on the team in kills with 12 on the night, one kill behind team leader Paige Klocke who had 13. 

At match point, Glidden Ralston kept up well in set four and was close to winning, but West Central Valley kept ahead by a few steps and forced a game five by a score of 25-21. The Wildcats of West Central Valley were able to flip a switch and stay ahead of Glidden Ralston, eventually leading to them winning set five 15-10 and the game 3-2 in sets. Glidden Ralston Head Coach Krista Bundt says their biggest downfall was missed serves, but she felt like her team adjusted well defensively when West Central Valley was going line on the left side. 

The loss drops Glidden Ralston to 1-2 on the season. They will travel to Audubon to take on the Wheelers and Madrid in a triangular on Tuesday, September 6th.

IKM-Manning at Boyer Valley

The IKM-Manning Wolves opened up their 2022 season with a match up against Boyer Valley Thursday night. The Bulldogs were in control in the first set, winning 25-14 over the Wolves. IKM-Manning did a good job of responding in the second set and kept it close throughout. Kylie Powers and Megan Williams led the way offensively in this game with four kills and three kills respectively. They were within a few points of winning, but ultimately Boyer Valley was able to pull away 25-23. Set three saw Boyer Valley pull away quickly and kept a large lead throughout, winning 25-10 and winning the match 3-0 in sets. Defensively for the Wolves, Williams and Powers both put up four blocks for the team total. 

The Wolves will host a triangular in their home gym, hosting East Sac and Coon Rapids Bayard on Tuesday, September 6th.
