The Crusaders started 4 freshman in their season opener on Monday, falling in three sets against Earlham. The Crusaders hung tough early, battling through some early jitters. They trailed 9-8 before Earlham was able to pull away for a 25-11 win. Gracy Johnson put the Crusaders up early in set 2, serving a pair of points, including an ace to open  the set. Coon Rapids Bayard had a chance late, down a couple points, but the experience for the Cardinals helped them pull out a tight 25-21 win, going up 2-0. The young Crusaders put some pressure on themselves early in the 3rd set and fell down and weren’t able to fully recover, losing 25-12. The Crusaders showed some positive signs, serving the ball well, along with getting some touches at the net.

Gracy Johnson led the offensive attack with 3 kills and 4 assists, along with a team high 2 aces. Malia Clayburg and Maddy Mason each had 2 kills. Senior libero Lacie Davis paced the back row with 7 digs while Violet Johnson showed some potential with 3 digs and Anna Hart added 2 digs.

The Crusaders host Panorama and Audubon on Thursday.
