New London vs Remsen St Mary’s – Class 1A Championship

New London                8

Remsen St. Mary’s      7

The New London Tigers had their backs against the wall late against Remsen St. Mary’s, but they were able to close out the Class 1A Championship game with a phenomenal defensive effort to win their first ever baseball title.

The Hawks got off to a solid start quickly in the top half of the first inning. Carter Schorg struck out Dereck Santiago, then Landon Waldschmitt threw down to second to get the double play and end the inning. Carter Schorg in the bottom half of the inning hit a deep ball to center field and he rounded second to give himself a triple. Jaxon Bunkers later brought him home with an RBI double, and Bunkers was brought home off an RBI triple from Cael Ortmann, giving Remsen St. Mary’s the 3-0 lead early. The Tigers were able to swing the momentum to their corner with a solo home run shot from Tucker Gibbar and a sacrifice RBI from Brenden Richey to score Carter Allen, cutting down the Hawk’s lead to 3-2.

New London kept that momentum on their side in the third when they got another two runs to lead 4-3 with a sacrifice RBI from Allen and Kooper Schulte scoring off an error. Allen would end up as one of three New London players to end the game with three RBIs. While Remsen St. Mary’s was able to tie the game up at 4-4 with a sacrifice RBI from Brenden Fisch, New London kept attacking offensively with four runs scored in the fourth inning. Santiago, Gibbar, Allen, and Brenden Richey all battled well and were credited with RBIs. Those four runs gave the Tigers the lead back at 8-4.

New London kept playing well against the four-time state champion Hawks with a U5, 3-2 double play that ended the fifth inning. Remsen St. Mary’s still had plenty in the tank as they’d mount a solid comeback in the seventh. With one out, the Hawks rattled off three runs to cut down the Tiger lead to 8-7. Collin Homan got a sacrifice RBI, Austin Klein in his first at-bat got an RBI double, and Waldschmitt hit an RBI single to give his team a shot at a late-game comeback.

The Tigers were unable to get anything going offensively in the seventh, so it was down to their defense to finish the game. Remsen St. Mary’s had a flyout to left field for out number one, but would later load up the bases with a walk, an error, and an intentional walk from New London. Alex Schroeder for the Hawks got a hit that went right to New London pitcher Cooper Schulte who set up the 1-2, 2-3 double play to secure the Class 1A championship for New London.

Remsen St. Mary’s season comes to an end with a final record of 35-1 and New London will celebrate their first-ever state baseball crown.
