Brincks Exteriors Sports Report: Van Meter Advances to Championship Game with Big 6th Inning

Van Meter advances into the State Championship game against ELC with a big 6th inning propelling them to their 53rd straight win and 38th win this season. The game was tied at 1, after both teams scored a run in the 2nd inning, Van Meter benefited from an error to start the 6th and then got a grand slam home run by Ike Speltz. They would score 8-runs in the inning to blow the game open.

Owen Huehnergarth singled, took 2nd on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Matthew Florance, Beckman Catholic loaded the bases but didn’t score again and led 1-0 going to the bottom 2nd. Ike Speltz led off the bottom 2nd for Van Meter with a double and moved to 3rd on a wild pitch. He scored on a RBI groundout to 2nd base by Ben Gilliland and Van Meter tied the game at 1. Beckman Catholic missed an opportunity again in the 3rd, loading the bases when Own Huehnergard singled and Nate Offerman and Logan Burchard were both hit-by-pitch. Jack Pettitt induced a groundout to 3rd base to end the threat. Van Meter got a single from Jack Pettitt bottom 3rd but didn’t score and Beckman Catholic would leave 2 more on base in the 4th.

Nate Offerman of Beckman Catholic picked up a nifty 6U-6-3 double play to end the bottom 4th and kept the game tied at 1.  Owen Huehnergarth doubled for Beckman to lead off the 5th, but Jack Pettitt got the next three batters out. Pettitt hit a batter for the 3rd time in the game with 1 out, top 6th and Reese Moore replaced him. Beckman Catholic stranded a runner at 2nd and the game remained tied at 1. Jack Pettitt reached on an error to start the 6th, Carter Durflinger put down a terrific base hit bunt down the 1st base line and Reese Moore was hit-by-pitch to load the bases. Gannon Archer hit a bloop single to shallow left field, scoring Pettitt. Ike Speltz hit the first pitch he saw after a pitching change deep over the left field fence for a grand slam home run and Van Meter opens up the game, leading 6-1. Jack Pettitt doubled later in the inning, scoring a pair of runs and they extended the lead to 8-1.

Beckman Catholic ends their season at 25-14. Van Meter improves to 38-0.
