The Estherville Lincoln Central (ELC) Midgets are one step closer to a state title as they got past the Interstate 35 (I35) Roadrunners on Tuesday’s Class 2A Quarterfinal.
I35’s defense got off to a rough start in the first inning, giving up two errors allowing ELC to score two runs and lead 2-0. The Midgets grabbed another run scored in the second inning when Owen Larson crushed an RBI single to score Daryl Jensen. The ELC defense also committed some errors as well, one that happened in the third inning gave Brock Stephens the time to score a run and cut down the ELC lead to 3-1. Larson played all seven innings on the hill where he allowed five hits, no earned runs, and recorded 10 strikeouts. Kale Day for I35 had a solid time on the hill as well, allowing six hits, two earned runs, and recording eight strikeouts in four and two-thirds innings.
ELC’s offense kept the runs coming with a run scored in the fifth inning with Griffith Hoyer credited with an RBI and another in the sixth inning when Larson stole second off a mistimed play from I35. The Roadrunners didn’t get their offense back on track after their run scored in the third. They had a runner stranded at first in the fourth, a runner tagged out between first and second in the fifth inning, and a three-up, three-down inning in the sixth. ELC in the top of the seventh defensively was able to close out the game with a 6-3 putout, 5-3 putout, and a strikeout to continue their journey in the Class 2A tournament with a final score of 5-1.
I35’s season will come to an end with a final record of 24-7. ELC will play the winner of Mid Prairie and Cascade in the Class 2A Semifinals.
