St Mary’s moves into Wednesday evening semifinal with a dominant win over South Winneshiek in the quarterfinals. The Hawks hit two home runs, a triple and two doubles while holding the Warriors to 1 hit and 3 baserunners. The Hawks pitching was outstanding, combining to strikeout 11 and walk 2. St Mary’s got a run in the bottom 1st inning, then added 2 in the 3rd, a run in the 4th and 2 more in the 5th.
Carter Schorg tripled and scored in the 1st inning on a single by Jaxson Bunkers. South Winneshiek threatened with runners on 2nd and 3rd in the 2nd inning by Schorg struck out the next two batters and St Mary’s remained up 1-0. They added to their lead in the 3rd. Carter Schorg walked to lead off the inning, Brody Schorg came in to run for him and Bunkers launched a ball over the left field fence and St Mary’s led 3-0 after 3. After South Winneshiek went down in order top 4th, Collin Homan led off the bottom 4th with a towering home run to right field putting St Mary’s up 4-0. Isaiah Gerrietts singled and moved to 2nd on an error, then moved to 3rd base on a base hit by Brendan Fisch. Keagan Streeter was able to get out of trouble with a groundout to shortstop but St Mary’s led 4-0 going to the 5th. Hunter Pick extended the St Mary’s lead in the 5th with a double to right-center field scoring Cael Ortman who had walked. Keaton Harpenau came in to run for Pick and scored on a throwing error to make it 6-0.
Carter Schorg went 5 2/3 innings, allowing 1 hit with a pair of walks. Schorg added a triple and run scored at the plate. Jaxson Bunkers went 2-3 with a 2-run home run and 3 RBI. Cael Ortman went 1-2 with a double and scored a run. Hunter Pick doubled, driving in a run and Collin Homan homered.
Jamie Kuennen had the lone hit for South Winneshiek.
St Mary’s improves to 34-0 and will take on Kingsley Pierson in Wednesday semifinal round game at 4:30.
