Lisbon vs Newman Catholic – Class 1A Quarterfinals

Newman Catholic      3

Lisbon                          2

Lisbon was able to come back from a 3-0 deficit against number two seeded Newman Catholic to make it a close game, but the Knights ended up getting the better of the Lions in Monday’s Class 1A Quarterfinal game.

Newman Catholic, returning to the state tournament for the first time since 2020, got their offense off to a solid start with a sacrifice RBI from Nash Holmgaard to get them up 1-0. Lisbon returned to Merchants Park with back-to-back state tournament appearances, and they had to battle hard in the beginning. They left a runner at first in the first inning and later had their first three batters struck out to end the inning quickly. The Knights pushed forward in the third inning with two runs scored off an error by the Lisbon defense, extending their lead to 3-0.

The Lions roared back in the game in the fourth inning with a sacrifice RBI from Tyson Scott and a nice RBI single from Cohen Kamaus to cut down the Newman Catholic lead to 3-2. The Lisbon defense also stepped up their game with a three-up, three-down inning in the fourth, leaving Newman Catholic runners at second and third, and another three-up, three-down inning in the sixth. Newman Catholic stepped up their defense as well, getting back-to-back innings where the first three Lisbon batters were retired. Doug Tayler was on the hill for the entire game for the Knights, where he allowed only four hits and no earned runs while recording 12 strikeouts. Hunter Clark for Lisbon had similar success, allowing six hits, two earned runs, and recorded nine strikeouts.

Newman Catholic held on to their 3-2 lead going into the top of the seventh when they looked to close it out. Taylor struck out the first two batters but hit the next batter he faced, and the Knights’ defense committed an error that allowed the Lions to get on first and second. Despite a nice late game comeback from Lisbon, a dropped third strike was the last play of the game to give Newman Catholic the 3-2 victory.

The Lions season will come to an end with a final record of 24-6. Newman Catholic continues on in the Class 1A tournament as they will take on New London at Merchants Park on Wednesday around 7:00 PM.
