Brincks Exteriors Sports Report: Kuemper Rally Falls Short in 7th Inning

Kuemper rally in the 7th inning fell just short, falling by one run at West Central Valley in a Regional Semifinal on Friday. Jordan Schwabe drove a 2-run home run out of the park in the 7th, pulling the Knights within 6-5. They had rallied back from down 5-2 in the 5th inning and had a chance in the 6th inning, loading the bases with 1 out but were only able to score 1 run, pulling to within 5-3. West Central Valley squeezed in an insurance run in the bottom 6th and that turned out to be the difference in the game.

Kamryn Venner put Kuemper up in the 2nd inning, doubling to Kaylie Diercksen who led off the inning with a single. Diercksen was moved to 2nd base and scoring position by a sac bunt by Alexis Diercksen. West Central Valley answered in the bottom 2nd with a single and a Kuemper error. The game was tied at 1 heading into the 3rd inning. West Central Valley took the lead for good in the 3rd, getting their lead runner on, she scored on a wild pitch. The lead grew to 4-1 in the 4th inning as the Wildcats strung together three straight hits and a Kuemper error after the Knights had 2 outs. Ally Sommerfeld led off the 5th for Kuemper with a single and scored on a base hit by Melinda Schaefer. Kuemper pulled within 4-2, heading into the bottom of the 5th. West Central Valley extended the lead to 5-2, with a  hit and another Kuemper error. The Kuemper bats heated up in the 6th when Kenzie Schon, Kaylie Diercksen and Alexis Diercksen all singled, with Schon scoring top pull within 5-3. The Knights had a chance to cut into the lead more with Ally Sommerfeld walking to reload the bases after Schon scored. A strikeout and a fly ball to centerfield ended the Kuemper threat. West Central Valley took advantage of a Kuemper error in the 6th to score an insurance run and led 6-3 going to the 7th. Melinda Schaefer started the Kuemper rally in the 7th with a base hit. Jordan Schwabe followed that with a 2-run home run and Kuemper was within 1. Alexis Diercksen singled and Kamryn Venner doubled to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs but Kuemper was unable to score the tying run.

Melinda Schaefer and Alexis Diercksen both had 3 hits for Kuemper with Schaefer adding a RBI and run scored. Jordan Schwabe had a 2-run home run as part of her 2 hits, with 2 runs batted in and a run scored. Kamryn Venner doubled and drove in a run. Kenzie Schon, Kaylie Diercksen and Ally Sommerfeld all scored a run. Kamryn Venner took the loss, going 6 innings, allowing 7 hits and 2 earned runs with 6 strikeouts.

Jordan Schwabe broke the single season RBI record for Kuemper with her 2-run home run, picking up her 40th RBI of the season, surpassing the old record held by Kalee Peter and Bailey Nichols.

The Knights wrap up the season 22-16.
