Kuemper vs West Monona at Cherokee – Class 1A District 16

Kuemper             6

West Monona    2

The Kuemper Knights had some difficulties on both sides of the ball as they took on West Monona, but their luck changed in the sixth innings in the Class 1A District 16 Semifinals.

Kuemper’s struggles started defensively as they allowed West Monona to score a run off an error in the second inning. The all-turf field at Cherokee also played a part in the cadence of the defense with Carter Putney sliding past a bunt ball in the beginning parts of the contest. The Knights were able to tie up the game in the bottom of the second when Cooper Pottebaum got home. Both teams stayed tied at one run apiece for a while with the Knights making a change defensively, putting Mason Knerl on the mound in the third inning. Knerl was able to change the momentum of the defense by throwing consistently and giving the defense behind him a chance to make plays.

The Knights were able to grab their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth when Koby Lampman got John Boes home to lead 2-1. Boes had a solid night of hitting by going 3-3 with a double and two runs scored, and he was the start of a big change for Kuemper. In the sixth inning, Kuemper got their offense going after one out was recorded when Benicio Lujano got a double. Copper Pottebaum was able to bring him and Cal Wanninger home with a two RBI single. With two outs, Max Irlmeier was able to rocket off a two RBI double to score Pottebaum and Boes to give the Knights a solid 6-1 lead. The West Monona offense was trying to mount a late-game comeback in the seventh. They were able to score a runner when JJ Lander hit an RBI single. With runners at second and third, the Kuemper defense was able to close out the game with a 1-3 putout, flyout to Boes, and a final flyout to Cal Wanninger at first base to come away victorious by a final score of 6-2.

The victory will bring the Knights into the District 16 finals as they take on OABCIG on Saturday, July 9th in Cherokee.
