The Merchants had a game slip through their finger tips on the road Friday. They built a 2-0 lead in the 5th inning, but gave up 3-runs in the 7th and 8th innings combined to fall 3-2. It was a good pitching dual with Pete Weil going 7 2/3 innings for the Merchants and Zach Nelson pitching the final 1/3 inning. They combined to give up 4 hits and struck out 7. The Merchants bats were cool, but they battled to finish with 5 hits but didn’t score after the 5th inning. They left a runner on base in the 6th, 8th and 9th innings.
Seth Christiansen singled to right field in the 1st inning, scoring Parker Ingram, putting the Merchants up 1-0. Andrew Schroeder extended it to 2-0 in the 5th inning, driving in Ingram, who scored both of the Merchants runs. St Joe got on the board in the 7th on a bases loaded ground out. They took the lead in the 8th with a triple, scoring a pair of runs. Pete Weil and Jordan Matthewson both walked for the Merchants in the 8th inning with one out but a double play ended the threat. Michael Alt walked with two outs in the 9th but the Merchants weren’t able to drive him in.
Kaleb Freeman had a team high 2 hits, Parker Ingram doubled and scored twice. Seth Christiansen had a base hit and RBI, Noah Dutler had a base hit and Andrew Schroeder drove in a run. Pete Weil went 7 2/3 innings, allowing 4 hits and 3 earned runs while striking out 7.
The Merchants play at St Joe on Saturday.
