Kuemper at Red Oak

The Kuemper Knights were able to split a double header with Red Oak Friday and grab their 10th win of the season.

In Game one, both teams showed off their offenses well with double-digit scores by the end. Red Oak started off the run-fest with a mild one-run score in the bottom of the first inning to lead it 1-0. Kuemper then got the offensive engine revved up with a four-run inning to take a big 4-1 lead. Red Oak’s response was a four-run inning of their own, taking back the lead at 5-4. The runs kept on coming, Kuemper added five runs to their total, taking back the lead at 9-5, then Red Oak popped off for seven runs in the bottom half of the third inning, reclaiming the lead at 12-9. Kuemper’s offense in this game was led by Carter Putney who went 3-4 with three runs scored, a triple, an RBI, and two stolen bases. Benicio Lujano, Cal Wanninger, and Max Irlmeier all knocked two base hits in this game as well with Irlmeier and Lujano recorded two RBIs apiece.

Kuemper was able to put up at least a run in every inning from the second on, but it was the big seven-run inning that widened the gap for Red Oak, not to mention another four-run inning in the sixth that sealed it for them. Both teams ended up with double-digit scores by the end, but it was Red Oak who stood victorious 18-13.

Game two was another big scoring game, but Kuemper ran the bases extremely well on top of continuing to hit well. The Knights were first on the board this time with a three-run second inning, while Red Oak was only able to manage one run in the bottom half of the inning. Kuemper continued to score runner after runner with three more scored in the third and four in the fourth for their biggest inning of game two, leading 10-1. Red Oak clapped back with a five-run inning of their own to cut down the Kuempe lead to 10-6. All around Kuemper’s offense was solid in this game, especially Kolby Lampman who went 2-4 with two runs scored and five stolen bases. Cooper Pottebaum was also a big help offensively, going 1-4 with a triple and three RBIs. Both Kuemper and Red Oak managed to put up two runs each from the fifth inning until the seventh when Kuemper closed it out to win it 12-8. Tristan Janson and John Anthofer shared time on the mound for the Knights where they recorded nine strikeouts but allowed five earned runs off eight hits.

After this double header, the Knights improve to 10-6 overall on the season and 3-3 in the Hawkeye 10 Conference. They return to action on Monday, June 13th when they travel to take on Creston.
