After nearly five and a half hours, the Carroll Merchants were able to put away the Chillicothe Mudcats in 12 innings with solid hitting and defensive plays Tuesday night. Early in the game, the Merchants saw some solid pitching from Ben Colderion and great routine plays from the guys behind him. It was the third inning where Chillicothe was able to manufacture runs due to a dip in performance on the hill. Tanner Sears of the Mudcats hit a grand slam into the scoreboard to get Chillicothe up 4-0, and later Jonah Sanford was able to score to put the Mudcats lead up to 5-0. The Merchants responded well with a three-run bottom half of the inning thanks to a two RBI double from Andrew Schroeder, cutting down the Mudcat lead to 5-3.
The Merchants were able to grab the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to a few errors from the Chillicothe side. Carroll was able to get four home and take a 9-7 lead into the seventh inning. The Mudcats grabbed the lead back by one run in the top of the seventh at 10-9 from the Merchants’ walking batters. Carroll’s night on the hill wasn’t so pretty in the later innings, with over nine walks recorded and accounting for a big portion of the runs scored from Chillicothe. Both teams ended up tied after the ninth inning when Carroll’s Danny Schweitzer hit a deep ball back to the fence for a three RBI triple after Parker Ingram and Jordan Matthewson both scored earlier on. For three straight innings, both teams got runners on the bags, but had little to show for it until the 12th inning. The Mudcats were able to grab the lead with a score, but couldn’t get any insurance runs, leaving a runner at third. Carroll’s attempt in the 12th ended up being the game winner with J. Ben Haynes scored off a sac hit, and Andrew Schroeder hit the game winner to get Matthewson home for a walk-off base hit. The Merchants came back to win 16-15 over the Mudcats.
The Merchants will be on the road on Wednesday, June 1st as they will take on the Mudcats once again.
