Two bad innings were the difference as Kuemper falls in their season opener. Des Moines Christian scored 12 of their 15 runs in the 2nd and 5 innings combined, scoring 5 in the 2nd and grabbing the lead for good with 7 runs in the 5th inning. Kuemper took an early lead, scoring 4 times in the 1st inning. Cal Wanninger reached on an error with 2 outs in the bottom 1st then scored on a base hit from Trevor Rial, John Boes battled back down 0-2 to get hit-by-pitch and Max Irlmeier drove in Rial with a base hit. Benicio Lujano made it 4-0 with the first of his 3 hits. Des Moines Christian responded with a 2 out rally in the 2nd inning with the rally starting with four straight walks. Brady Andrews and Ty Andrews hit back-to-back to triples and Des Moines Christian went up 5-4.
Trevor Rial singled and scored on a single by Lujano in the 3rd, tying the game. Kuemper grabbed the lead back in the 4th, Carter Putney and Logan Sibenaller walked and scored on a ground out by Koby Lampman and a single by Trevor Rial. The 7-5 lead didn’t last long as Des Moines Christian scored 7 runs on 4 hits and 2 Kuemper errors in the 5th and never trailed again.
Kuemper finished with 4 errors on defense and walked 8 batters along with hitting 3. They picked up 8 hits with Benicio Lujano going 3-3 with 3 RBI, Trevor Rial added a 3-4 night with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. The Knights used three pitchers with Cal Wanninger getting the start. Nate Heinrichs took the loss and Trevor Rial pitched a strong 2 1/3 innings to close the game.
The loss starts Kuemper 0-1 on the season. They host LoMa on Wednesday.
