The Audubon Wheelers got the 2022 season off with a win as they were able to get past Glidden Ralston Monday night. First game jitters played some part for players, but freshman Colby Wallace for Glidden Ralston was able to get the Wildcats off on the right foot. He’d face seven batters in the first two innings in his first start of the season, and he’d strike out five of them and only walked one. That shook up the Wheelers in their defensive innings as Jonathan Bergmeier crushed a ball to shallow left field in the bottom of the second inning to score Caden Wenck, and give Glidden Ralston a 1-0 lead.

The momentum swung back to Audubon’s corner in the top of the third inning as they’d get on base thanks to hit by pitches and a few errors from the Wildcats. The Wheelers grabbed the lead at 2-1 without even recording a hit. Glidden Ralston tried to answer in the bottom half of the inning, but the Wheelers got a 6-3 play to leave two Wildcats stranded on base. Audubon’s big inning came in the fourth where they’d load up the bases, cause a pitching change from Glidden Ralston, and bring home four runners, all without a single hit. John Whitver tried to get the Wildcats back on track, only after the Wheelers grabbed a 6-1 lead. Audubon was able to get their bats going in the sixth inning where Colton Hansen, Jay Remsburg, Brody Schultes, and Larsen all got hits and helped the Wheelers get up 9-1.

A pitching change from Audubon was the difference maker as Carson Meaike replaced Larsen in the fourth inning and went on to record nine strikeouts. After the Wheelers put up one more run in the top of the seventh inning, extending their lead to 10-1, the Wildcats had a small comeback. Bergmeier once again saw his bats come alive with a double to get Ethan Olberding in scoring position, and later the both of them scored as did Jackson Sklenar off an error from Audubon, cutting down the Wheeler lead to 10-4. The comeback was not to be as Meaike struck out Mark Lensch and caught a pop-fly to end the game, giving Audubon their first win of the season.

Next up for both teams, Audubon will travel to take on Griswold on Tuesday, May 17th while Glidden Ralston will take on Coon Rapids Bayard on Wednesday, May 18th.
