Kuemper At Carroll
Kuemper 3
Carroll 2
Kuemper held off a furious rally from Carroll in the 2nd half and held on for a 3-2 win as they improved to 3-5 on the season while the Tigers played their best match of the season, especially in the 2nd half but fell to 0-5. Both defenses were solid in the 1st half with the only goal coming on a Karly Baumhover penalty kick, giving Kuemper a 1-0 lead with 31:11 left. Baumhover did a nice job getting Jayden Kirsch leaning one way and shooting the other way. Kuemper took advantage of having the wind at their back in the 1st half and had more opportunities to score in the 1st half but couldn’t capitalize. The Knights led 1-0 at half, though things would change quickly in the 2nd half. Catherine Mayhall attacked on the right side but was stopped by Kirsch who finished with 7 saves. The ball dribbled free in front of the net and Carroll High tried to clear it but kicked the ball into its own goal. Mayhall would be credited with an assist and Kuemper led 2-0 with 35:46 left. Moments later Mayhall made one of the best shots of the season, curving the ball from the left sideline, over the outstretched arms of a jumping Kirsch, sliding the ball just under the top of the goal. The tough kick put Kuemper ahead 3-0 with 33:34 left. That looked like it would be enough as Kuemper outshot Carroll 16-7 for the match.
Carroll kept fighting and gained momentum when Sophia Polking found the ball bounding in front of her with an open look at the goal. She tapped it to gain control, then slide a shot into the goal before Ashlyn Badding could recover. Carroll was on the board, down 3-1 with 25:05 left. Carroll attacked the ball more in the 2nd half, being the aggressor, which helped them find more success on offense. That would benefit them as Paige Pothoff, streaked down the right side, tracking down the ball and slipping a shot past the diving Badding with 15:26 left and Carroll was down 3-2 but had taken over the momentum. Carroll had several more opportunities to tie the game, with their best chance on a attack on the right side from Mary Perkins, who had played most of the game on defense, helping Kirsch defend the Tigers net. Perkins showed some speed and good ball handling with just over 3:00 left and got a one on one with Badding. Badding came up with a nice stop, reading the shot and being right where Perkins tried to score. Kuemper defense was able to hold on and Kenya Prescott did a tremendous job in the closing seconds, winning battles for the ball near midfield, helping run out the clock.
Catherine Mayhall and Karly Baumhover scored goals for Kuemper and Ashlyn Badding added 10 saves. Kenya Prescott had a team high 6 shots on goal with Mayhall adding 5 shots and Kiley Trecker getting a pair of shots on goal.
Sophia Polking and Paige Pothoff each scored for Carroll with Jayden Kirsch finishing with 7 saves. Emersyn Walsh added a pair of shots on goal, Mary Perkins and Trista Reis also had a shot on goal.
Kuemper heads to LoMa on Friday while Carroll hosts Boone on Tuesday.
